I bet tennis refs wish they had the power baseball umps have - to throw someone outta there.

I've never been a fan of tennis, so I'm quite ignorant about the players, etc. However, I seem to remember that McEnroe made a name for himself - even with folks like me who were thoroughly disinterested in Tennis - by being a "jerk" in the minds of most people. But now that a Black player acts the way McEnroe acted, which earned him a bad reputation, we're supposed to side with the Black player? Because the player is Black?

Having played in competitive tennis leagues, intimidation is a tool of some players.

I have faced players who threw a tantrum just to put you off your game too.

I have had players call balls out when they clearly were in..or say I did not see where it landed, so play it over.

I think Rush is onto something.

I usually do not root for Serena. I see women playing against someone built more like a man than a lot of men. It is not unfair, but hard to overcome.

Tennis used to be a game for gentlemen and ladies.
Nastasse and Mcenroe changed that. Tantrums were
frequent and it got to the point of mooning with the former. I always thought they were immature.
Sometimes they were right, but like one poster said, in baseball, you gripe, nothing changes and sometimes you get thrown out of the game.

Some people are just poor sports. I HATE to lose, but act like that on tv, and it is bad, as far as I am concerned, for the sport.

From a brief search on Google, a list of former "Bad Boys and Girls" in the world of professional Tennis:

Roddick, Nadal, McEnroe, Conners, Tarango, Kendrick, Nastase..........and Serena Williams (2009 and 2011)

So, this crap is nothing new.

Billy Jean stated that it is about gender. "if she was a man . ." and most of the dialog seems to be along that line as well. so I think it is about her being unfairly treated as a female. Someone show me that the opponent in the match was treated differently and OK. I get sick of all this narcissistic crap. AND comparing themselves to people who were properly discriminated against in competition. Maybe she should read about Jesse Owens and all the other athletes in the '36 Olympics. What a sniveling twat.

I think the cartoonist is referring to the 2009 US Open semi-final that Serena lost to Kim Clijsters (Belgium):

Pro tennis seems to have a disproportionate number of emo baby shits. Remember Ilie Nastase from the 1970s and John McEnroe from the 1980s? By contrast, there was Arthur Ashe.

The press cheered Serena in her post match press conference. She had just played the sexism card, spewing platitudes about fighting for women's rights and equality and the press cheered.

Let that sink in. The press cheered.

She is just a sore loser, also not sure if allowed during competition but they commented and have it on video of her coach giving hand signals to her from the stands.

Basically every time she is losing she decides to self destruct and then blame it on everyone else. In 2009, she threaten the life of lines person and was suspended for two years. 2011 she was losing and acted up again.

I haven't followed tennis in decades.

Williams is an entitled bitch. Appropriately, she is a big time rep for Nike. Seems this Osaka gal is the next Big Thing and Williams is now throwing a tantrum on her way to the Old Timers Day. Osaka is sponsored by Adidas, her contract expires at the end of the year Smile

I tried to turn on the Nationals game on MASN, but its is rained out. So there was this ESPN sportscenter or some stupid show and they were in 100% agreement and going on and on and on, about how Righteous Selena is and how the judge should never get to officiate again.
it took like 15-20 seconds to find something else to watch and that was too long.

2009, she was put on probation.

quote:
2009 US Open
In the US Open semifinal round against Kim Clijsters, Williams slammed her racquet on the court after losing the first set. She was given a warning, with a potential second violation carrying a one-point penalty. While trailing 4–6, 5–6, 15–30, Williams's second serve was called a foot fault, resulting in two match points for Clijsters. Williams gestured with her racquet to the lineswoman who had made the call and yelled at her, with profanities and a threat to shove a tennis ball down the lineswoman's throat. During the subsequent on-court conference between the chair umpire, the lineswoman, US Open officials, and Williams, a television microphone picked up Williams saying to the lineswoman, "I didn't say I would kill you! Are you serious?" The incident resulted in Williams being penalized a point for unsportsmanlike conduct‍—‌necessitated by the earlier warning for racquet abuse‍—‌meaning Clijsters won the match 6–4, 7–5. The following day, Williams was issued the maximum permissible on-site fine of $10,000 (plus $500 for racquet abuse). After further investigation, the Grand Slam Committee in November 2009 fined her $175,000 in lieu of suspending her from the 2010 US Open or other Grand Slam events. They also placed her on a two-year probation, so if Williams committed another offense in the following two years at Grand Slams, she would be suspended from participating in the following US Open. If she committed no offenses in the next two years, her fine would be reduced to $82,500.[285] Williams initially refused to apologize for her outburst, both in her post-match press conference[286] and in an official statement released the following day. She eventually did, stating "I just really wanted to apologize sincerely because I'm a very prideful person, and I'm a very intense person and a very emotional person", and "I wanted to offer my sincere apologies to anyone that I may have offended." She said she was humbled by the experience.

She’s a bitch. She is just another woman pissed off that she isn’t the hot young thing getting all the attention and she is a sore loser, thinking she deserves to win every slam or big tournament. Serena loathes Maria Sharapova and Sloane Stephens. Gee I wonder why? Serena has a diva attitude and I have loathed her since the beginning. I’ve watched tennis since the McEnroe/Navratilova days and never disliked someone like I do her, and it is certainly not the color of her skin. Sloane Stephens handles herself a universe better. And I think prime to prime, Steffi Graf would have kicked her ass, Martina as well. She has pulled this stunt before so I am glad to see this getting the attention it deserves. She can’t hide from this episode like the previous ones. All her bullshit and her opponent was half black, half Japanese. Serena’s hypocrisy knows no bounds. Fuck her. Her opponent kicked her ass even before all this bullshit which is why she temper tantrumed. She knew she was going down. I can’t believe the people and organizations backing her and this behavior. Siding with this bitch against a 20 year old winning her first Grand Slam. 4 months until the next Slam and I’ll be rooting against her with gusto.

I watched the highlights, and all I saw was Osaka beating Serena, and Serena having an epic meltdown temper tantrum. I took everything else as a giant smokescreen for, I can't believe I am losing to this girl a 2nd time. I thought he award ceremony was sad, the tennis crowd bought into Serena's rant hook, line and sinker and was booing the winner.

I have a few SIGs.
