For me, the best part of the story is that she caused the chinese team to drop to 5th place, so out of the medals Smile

Whatever you do don't test positive and get stuck in a quarantine hotel where the food sucks and there's apparently better treatment for different classes of people.

Megan's ego and political clout have been detrimental to the development of younger players who need first team competition to improve. Glad the manager finally had the guts to leave her and some of the other long in the tooth 30-somethings off the team in favor of the next generation.

By giving the athletes inferior food, it's to try to give their chinese competitors an advantage.

Don't forget Chelios and Smith, those two famous Chinese hockey players hockey players who are famous in China. I'm not about to bother watching this horse manure, but I'm going to regret missing the Chinese hockey team's "Zhu Yi has fallen" moment.

Between Li and Gu, Elaine Gu is the bigger story and one that will create the most stir once her events start.

Born in San Francisco and attending an exclusive private high school, along with plans to attend Stanford, Gu comes from wealth, privilege and access. Only 19, she's one of the top Freestyle skiers in the world. She secured several X-Games wins over the years and, besides Red Bull sponsorship and all the other top-name brands in the winter industry, she also likes to play fashion model with a host of fashion sponsorships to include Louis Vitton and others. She's quite attractive and physically resembles a catwalk model rather than an athlete; free-style skiers tend to be shorter, more stout. Like gymnasts and divers, being tall and lean generally is a disadvantage for this sport.

She's surrounded by a LOT of people, who's convinced her she's a 'world citizen', and she can serve as 'inspiration to others'; she's the face of the Winter Games on malls, billboards and various advertisements around China. They're pumping her up as a triumph of Chinese superiority, nick-naming her the 'Snow Princess' (rather diminutive as they usually do with female celebrities), there's a lot of narrative crafting around Gu as China intends to use her for their Winter sport campaigns. She speaks Mandarin fluently and has traveled quite a bit, the irony is San Francisco's Chinese population is largely Cantonese speaking, there's not a lot of Mandarin speakers there. For her sponsors, she's the golden-goose marketing vehicle for them to connect with Chinese consumers.

American citizens going to compete for the countries of their parents origin is not unusual, however most of the time their choice in representation is because that country is under-represented in the sport, not to mention the country is socially open and transparent. Immigrants choosing to represent the US, even though they weren't born here makes for great stories and a triumph of our open and transparent society. Gu's choice, like some of these others, is pathetically mis-guided. China is a highly patriarchal society (see her nick-name), socially regulated with very little transparency (remember tennis star Peng Shuai?) or, government accountability is malleable. Gu's impressions and interactions of China are of somebody who's gotten a lot of access and affluence; the governing bodies will insure her impressions and experiences of China are highly positive....provided she wins and doesn't say anything disparaging. By giving up her US citizenship, and once her athletic and modeling days are over, she will highly likely regret her decision.

Whomever made the decision to go is responsible for the world wide debacle
I saw where the IOC sat on their decision & gave the ok to boycott a day or two AFTER the opening ceremonies. The stupidity continues.

Welcome to pure communism comrades.

That story is about a different athlete completely. A Chinese athlete, born and raised in China. Don't know why it's even posted in this thread.

Actual, legal renunciation of U.S. Citizenship is a) not easy to accomplish and b) generally irreversible, if you actually do it correctly. It has to be done abroad-- not in the States-- before a U.S. Consular Officer, who will spend literally all day, if necessary, explaining why it's a horribly bad idea.

If you ignore them and expatriate anyway, you're on your damn own.

No consular protection, because you're not one of ours any more. Want to visit the States? Do it like any other foreigner from your "new" country (including getting a tourist visa if you're Chinese, and good luck establishing to possibly the same consulate you expatriated at that you actually intend to return to China.) Assuming the ChiComs LET you leave, even temporarily, because you're now high-profile and a huge potential embarrassment if you skip.

At 18, she has no business making important decisions. This is pretty much the most important one you can make that can't be somehow mitigated after you do it, when you realize it was a mistake.

That goes without saying. Who would eat Chinese with a stainless steel fork?
Certainly not I. Smile

It was a win win for China.

If she did well, they could say she gave up her American citizenship realizing the best country of choice is China.

Since she did poorly, they're saying this is what American upbringing do to you - takes a world-class athlete with great genes and degrades her abilities.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
