Oh Toyota you magnificent bastards. I was sad to see the US lose the TLC.

I’m not feeling so sad anymore. The new Toyota Land Cruiser is lighter, more affordable and pays homage to its past while moving forward with modern technology.

Yes!!!!!

Link to article

Pulling a page from what Ford did with the Bronco Toyota is making a variant for everyone.

Prefer vintage looks of the land cruisers of the past? There is a throwback/retro version.

Do you prefer a more traditional (boxy front headlight style) that reminds you of the bullet proof 80’s & 90’s Toyotas? Toyota is thinking about you too. Not committing to only one style is IMO very smart!

This part of the article really caught my attention.

“ Under the hood is a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid powertrain called iForce Max and producing 326 hp and 465 pound-feet of torque.”

Toyota surprised the heck out of me with this baby!

I've owned multiple LCs and love them. But I have no interest in a 4 cylinder hybrid LC. They need to offer the twin-turbo 6 cylinder gas option for the US market. See below.

This could take me away from my Honda. Like you, I noted the engine. What does hybrid powertrain mean? Battery too? I do know the 2.4L turbo is in the new Highlander.

Having owned LC’s, you’ve probably already seen that the new Lexus GX 550 will have the TT V6 (with hybrid to come later), and is the same platform as the new Land Cruiser (Prado). But I’m betting the GX trail version will be at least $15k higher than the LC. Like you, I can’t say I’m too excited about a hybrid 4-cylinder in the new LC.

I was pissed about Toyota’s new hybrid only Sienna until I drove one. It’s fast! Those bashing the hybrid drivetrain will be shocked if/when they drive one with a turbo engine and 400+ ft lbs of torque.

The 6,000 lb towing capacity is also a big plus in my book!

IMO, the LC is still gone. This is a uni-body 4 cylinder also-ran SUV with an LC badge.

Funny to see this as I was just on Toyotas website looking for a RAV4. The one model looks like an FJ Cruiser with real back doors instead of the old ‘suicide’ back doors as I used to call them. Should be a good seller for Toyota.

We bought a new yellow FJ40 LandCruiser in 1976. It was a beast - an absolute beast. I got rear-ended in it by a new Honda Civic at a light in Billings, MT. The Civic was totaled and we had to replace a bumper ring for under $100. It was a beast.

I was really excited until I found out there is no third row. Rules it out for our family with grandkids.
I love the looks.

The last true LC in the US was the 2021 year model (200 series). The 300 series continues to be produced overseas, and isn’t available in the US. This recently revealed LC is essentially a LC Prado, with the “Prado” being dropped from the name. The LC Prado has been available overseas for quite awhile, and is the Toyota version of the Lexus GX 460, which has been around for many years.

I'm still sticking with a vintage (2003) 4Runner Limited with a V8 mill (235 Hp 320 Lb-Ft). LoL

Yes, sir!!

I'd be mighty happy with that 3.3-liter V6 twin-turbo diesel engine option, too. Cool

God bless America.

Hopefully they offer it on the Land Cruiser rather than a super hard angled/ polarizing body style Lexus variant.

But seriously is 400 ft lbs of torque not enough?

The turbo four will suit my needs just fine.

The only engine offered on this new LC is the hybrid 4-cylinder…no other option. If you haven’t seen the 2024 Lexus GX 550, check it out. Personally, I think it looks fantastic, especially the Overtrail trim. But again, it will be significantly more coin than the LC.

Looks like there's a diesel offering, 3.3L V6....but not in the US market. Confused

So, what does this have that the Lexus GX doesn't?

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 is the luxury version of this 2024 Toyota LC. As far as I know, the GX hasn’t been offered in a true off-road version in the past. It seems that most off-road enthusiasts pick up the old GX’s and LC’s and build them out as desired. The GX is apparently one of the best 4WD off-road vehicles out there.

The 2024 GX 550 is the first real makeover of the vehicle in about 15 yrs. And the Overtrail trim is the first time it’s truly been marketed to off-roaders, I believe. It’s loaded with more luxury and more features than this new Toyo LC, including multi-terrain select, crawl control, panoramic camera views at slow speeds for trail management, etc. I believe the LC has some of these features. The biggest difference is the engine, the GX having the Twin Turbo V6 in its initial release.

I have to admit, if I picked up a new GX, no way I’d take it anywhere other than an occasional gravel or dirt road. I’d venture to say that most people who buy a new one would be the same.

Off-roaders, please correct me if I’m wrong on some of this stuff.
