My android won't allow national alerts to be turned off.

I live in a small city with major defense electronics communications vendors (Collins Aerospace and Vector Corp.) and several large food production businesses (General Mills, Quaker Oats and Ralston). In the event of a nuclear exchange we are definitely on the "A List". In that case I really don't want to know what is coming as the CD sirens will give me plenty of time to KMA goodbye. I will probably go outside to see what kind of tornado is about to hit like most Iowans do in storm season. "Hey Martha, look at that funnel cloud over there!", sitting on the front porch with a cup of coffee in hand. Assured instant vaporization will be a better fate than the zombie apocalypse that would ensue for an old fart like me.

Para, thanks for providing the instructions on how to disable these notifications!

With all the conspiracy theories floating around, I’ll add my own. The kids of South Park discover that when playing a specific musical note from their recorders, those who hear it, crap their pants.

I turned my Government Alerts off just to see if it works . I don't really care one way or the other if the alert comes through . This reminds me of the Y2K debacle .

So, you think that the administration that can't do ANYTHING right is actually going to get this right? Fat f#$%ing chance. Watch all the stammering and stuttering tomorrow night on the BREAKING NEWS. It will be interesting to see KJP spin this.

We should have a poll to determine which is the most likely excuse it didn't work.

I’m on a family group text that’s discussing this tonight and some of my family are a bit nutty and are actually talking about putting their phones inside of microwave ovens during that time. Or putting them in an RF shielded bag.

LOL

Apparently we'll all find out. It will be broadcast to all mobile devices, radio, and television. Nice little disruption in the middle of the day.

I'll be in a big meeting at that time, should be interesting.

Of course the conspiracy theorists have gone over the edge. I was at a little car show tonight and one of the guys got an email from his daughter claiming this would trigger all sorts of things including the dormant vaccine that would kill anyone who had it Confused Confused Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I am sure that you are correct Rightwire but I'm taking a packet of pumpkin spice scented Wet Wipes and a change of underwear in my briefcase tomorrow.
You know.
Just in case.

On newer versions of Android phones, national alerts can't be shut off. My S22 is such a phone. Google suckling up to pinko gooberment once again.

Tomorrow should be a slow day for me, so I guess there's no harm in having my phone offline in and around 11:20 Pacific.

I receive a daily news summary via email (if interested, you can register for it by emailing hello@join1440.com).

Today's newsletter stated
quote:
"National Emergency Alert Test

"Simultaneous tests of the nation's wireless and broadcast alert systems will ping cellphones, TVs, and radios across the US today at 2:20 pm ET, the first such nationwide test since August 2021.

"The less-than-one-minute alert—which can be deployed by only the US president or the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency—is designed to evaluate the network's effectiveness in communicating national alerts within 10 minutes. The system has its roots in the Cold War when officials sought a quick way to warn Americans of a possible attack from the Soviet Union. State and local governments frequently deploy similar systems for weather alerts.

"The cellphone notification will consist of a two-second tone followed by two one-second tones, a cycle which will be repeated twice, similar to Amber Alerts (listen here). Phones that are powered off, in airplane mode, or connected to the internet only through Wi-Fi will not receive the alert."

It might actually be kind of interesting to track the propagation of the alert across carrier platforms, e.g. see if the 5G elite gets it earlier than the LTE riffraff, or, perhaps, there is some locality-related correlation.

Also of interest, will every SMS-capable device get this alert, or is it limited to so-called "mobile" networks? I have a SIM phone that is tied into the national/global telephone network via VoIP, and is capable of sending and receiving SMS and MMS, will it get the alert? I guess we will see.

ETA: wife's work iPhone 14 - 2:18PM EDT, AT&T
wife's personal iPhone SE - 2:19PM EDT, Ting (T-Mobile MVNO)
my iPhone Xs - 2:19PM EDT, Ting (T-Mobile MVNO)
SIP phone - nope
