I’ve been up in Canada for the past 7 weeks and have two more before I head home.

It’s a complicated question. But I can sum it up as follows.

In general most people up here like Americans but they have a level of TDS that surpasses most rabid TDS case you will run across in the U.S.

They think he’s the worst person in the world because the media up here squelches out anything positive.

For example after the tariff tiff, you cannot buy any American alcohols up here. The decision was made at each provincial level. You cannot even bring it from the U.S. into Canada - it will be confiscated. The duty free shops at two border crossings were not just closed, they were emptied.

I won’t even discuss politics with family even though they continually try to bait me into a discussion.

You could get along quite well up here as long as no one ever finds out you’re a MAGA proponent or a republican.

There are people up here that understand what’s really going on but they are few and far between. Since they’re being fed bull shit by the media their entire perspective is skewed.

Let her bring her rowdy ass down to Tennessee. Our teenage "ladies" would stuff that "cotton candy" pink hair up her arse and turn her into an amiable Easter Bunny. Southern girls don't take kindly to being slapped. Mad

Boo hoo, poor baby.

Mr.Entitlement’s wife gets arrested and he starts a crowdfunding to free her.
“To ensure Kate can continue accessing the legal support she needs, we’ve established this new fundraising effort,” the sites reads. “Regardless of any municipal charges, every person deserves the right to fair, competent legal representation and due process. Access to an attorney should never depend on someone’s financial circumstances.”

Eh, ever heard of “public defender”?

So in essence he’s begging for money to support their poor choices in life and self control. It’s amazing to me how he has the huevos to ask strangers to save her ass as a result of her poor choices.

I’ll admit that back in the early 70’s a time or two our group of friends came together to help one of our cohorts that made a poor choice. One instance was to crowdfund amongst our group to raise bail for a friend in a county jail. I’ll admit that a paycheck or two received on Friday was turned into bail money on Saturday.

Ironic it would be if the teenager’s family contributed out of forgiveness and charity as MAGA christians.

But sometimes stupid should hurt.

Classy guy. Must have wore the most dirty, raggedy pair of sneakers that he could find to his own wedding. To much to ask to wear a pair of semi-clean shoes?

Yes, that's why they set their forests on fire to choke the east coast in smoke.

But also yes, because envy is a real SOB there are a significant portion of the population up there that don't hate us though and see their own country is a shadow of what they could be if only they had the wherewithal to be like us.

Holy shit. I had to scroll back and see that yes, it WAS a wedding photo!
What a pair of losers. Well it’s an old saying that “water seeks it own level” these found it in the sewer.
I’m sure they will be happy wallowing in each other’s misery and debt until OD’s take them both, preferably at the same time.

A Canadian friend who now lives in the US says her son, also residing in the US, can't drive his US tagged vehicle across the border. Probability of vandalism or destruction is far too high. TDS does indeed thrive in Canada.

It's not even TDS, there are a lot of Canadians who hate Americans. I caught shitty vibes and had minor confrontations in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa many times back in the 90's and early 2000's. It wasn't even political stuff, it was just cultural. Have things gotten worse since the Trump era? Yes, but it's not like they absolutely loved us in the decades leading up to it.

I lived in Calgary, Canada, 2014 to 2016. In general, Alberta is the most sane of the provinces but there was definitely an underlying inferiority complex that occasionally snuck out. One of the ways it sneaks out is to blame their problems on the USA (e.g. the problem can't be the Canadians who buy the drugs and the Canadian criminals who sell the drugs and buy guns, but instead it's America's fault as the guns/drugs passes through).

Quick story: I moved there to be on the management team of an oil & gas project and we were officing out of our oil & gas engineering consultants Calgary office. They're a large international engineering consultant and we're a multinational oil & gas company. Their Canadian Corporate office hosted a fancy Christmas party and somehow it fell to me to be our attendee. Out of the hundreds of attendees, I knew about 4 people there and one of them was a VP with our consultant so I was chatting with him and his son. A gorgeous saleswoman walks up and starts chatting with us (I think she liked the son), and she casually mentions that she just moved back to Calgary after being on a O&G project in Australia. I innocently state that "I've heard that it's easier for someone from a Commonwealth country to get an Australian work visa than it is an American." Out of nowhere she states, "Well, no one likes Americans anyway!" Dead silence until the VP breaks the silence and says "Todd is an American up here working with us." She stammered something and makes an excuse to saunter off. The VP says, "she isn't going to do well in sales if she doesn't learn to read a room before she speaks."

It’s exactly this. Smug anti Americanism is baked into Canadian nationalism. The socialist policies are often continued in the face of constant failures only because it’s not the American way. Canadians refuse to consider improving a failed public healthcare system because any parallel private system is seen as American style.

I'm trying to figure out what you mean by that?

Is it that the socialist followers of Justin Trudeau and Mark Carney hate us and their more conservative opponents don't hate the US?

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

I disagree. I think the Canadian who replied just before you nailed it: It's baked into Canadian nationalism. Same thing with the Brits and Australians. That's the perfect way to put it and mirrors my own experiences and interactions. Obviously not all of them, but plenty enough.

This thread reminds me of statements I've heard from people in those countries who are bemused by Americans learning for the first time that the prevailing private sentiment of the people in our allied countries tends to be that they don't really like us and our surprise at the discovery. It's not political, it's at a deeper level than that.
