I’m bewildered that this is a topic.

I can think of many reasons for extra ammo/mags.

I can think of no rational* reason for wanting less.

You can never have to much ammo. Since I am my wife’s and children QRF, I like to have 58 rounds of ammo and an RMR pistol with me.

Some persons can get by with .22 derringer as well.

So, at the end of this discussion, it’s your life, live it as you see fit.

I can't recall ever thinking, "Man, I wish I had less ammunition."

I carry at least one full reload for my handgun off duty. If it is a lower capacity firearm like a 1911, I carry at least 2 full reloads.

There is no rule that says I have to use it all.

like the Uber-popular p365, 11 in the gun, 20 on my hip, 30 in the truck...and no, I don't think I'm going to be attacked. If I thought that, I wouldn't be out. If I had to go out, all the guys with me would have full battle rattle for their rifles, pistols and back-up.

Other than the grunts of our great nation this may the only place in the country (world) where that's a majority opinion.

Have you or anyone else always carried these high round counts in this way since the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s ?

So have you always thought this since the first time you began carrying both before, on, and off, duty ?

Has everyone else except me carried 50 rounds since the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s ?

I can't believe I'm the only cc dummy who just got educated on the new reality.

I actually don’t carry 50. 31 has been my minimum since the 90s. If I’m going any place that I believe is sketchier than that, I take a rifle, plates and a bag full of spare mags.

My day job I carry 16 in the gun and a spare 20 rounder. I have 2 24 rounds mags on my day to day plate carrier. But, all of my stuff is scalable off of that initial 36 rounds.

I usually have 32 rounds on me. 16 in the gun and 16 in the spare. If I'm walking around the neighborhood I'll leave the spare at home but other than that it's always on me

Carry what you can get good quick hits with. Just be mindful of what and how the predators in your area are operating. Now robberies with 2-5 suspects in two or more vehicles ....in broad daylight on gas station lots are VERY common in the St. Louis County and St. Charles county area. They are also extremely common in St. Louis City but I refuse to step foot into that shit hole.

Boarding House Rule: Everyone gets a first serving before anyone gets a second serving....depending on the threat, distance, and what they are armed with.

Shoot fast, reload quicker and find cover at a speed approaching that of light.

Wolfe 21 - Fortunately, I've never had to shoot anyone.

But, I have shot a fox, and a raccoon which were acting rabid, and a buck with a broken back, and a rattle snake which was right by the steps of the house. And deliberately NOT shot a curious pig, with a 38 snubnose, because that seemed like a VERY dumb idea... Big Grin

Yes. But I only started carrying in the early 2000s.

My first handgun was a P239. I always carried a spare mag but obviously that wasn’t a lot of ammo.

My next guns were larger. 15+ rounds. Always carried a full sized mag and sometimes a second small gun.

When I wasn’t boring and actually still did real police work, it was 3 spare mags plus a backup gun, more mags in the car, plus a rifle.

These days I have to find my keys to get my gun out of my desk drawer lol (ok I’m not that worthless).

Now if you're the target of a mob, well then I could see his point. But for most "normal" SD situations (whatever the hell that is), I'm not sure I agree with him.

What say you guys ?

There are only two times when extra ammo is a liability--when you're in the water or on fire.

Otherwise, carry what you think you will need.
