I resisted opening this thread because I have a friend who just received a terminal diagnosis as a result of breast cancer--which also killed my mother-in-law. She has been fighting a tremendous battle and maintained a great attitude. She still has it now.

So sorry about Kadin.

I have been going to visit him in the VA hospice, which is WAY better than the hospital.

He is now wheelchair bound. will probably never walk again.

I roll him into the courtyard and we watch birds and talk about life.

It sucks.
He is emaciated, and withering away.
This is not the guy that I used race cars with.

They don't give a timeline on how long he will last, but with the way things are going, I don't think he will see the end of the year.
He is in so much pain, he is on 225mg of Hydromorphone, along with a bevy of other pain killers, muscle relaxers for his spasms, and anxiety.

I'm not going to sugar coat it, it's the way I am. But this is about the worst thing I have gone through.

At least when my father died, he went in his sleep overnight one night.

Kadin has holes in his bones, the cancer is eating it away. They give him radiation just to manage pain, they are not treating any of the cancer, it is too late.

Raingirl has been helping his brother clean out his house, and tossing out crap.

Wish I had some goods news.

I know it is very little solace, but you are a good man and a greater friend.

May you be strengthened.

And you have my utmost respect for walking beside Kadin in his journey.

Yes. And may peace be with you both.

The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

This is tough, guys.

So let me give you a little background on the man who is Kadin.
He went into the Navy straight out of high school.
Served in the Gulf War.

When I met him in 2001, he was out of the military and working at a print shop.

We were doing a 2 day track event at Motorsports Ranch in Cresson. The first day he met me, I was happy go lucky.
I got home from the first day at the track to find my house empty, and my first wife had left me. I was wiped out.
The next day I went to the track, he saw me there, different man. Asked what happened, and I laid it out.

He couldn't believe I was there. I said "Where else would I go?"

That was a start of the friendship that became the best I have in DFW.
He became a bit of a recluse, and never left the house. Except when Raingirl left town, and I could always count on him to come out to the ranch and stay with me. He always kept me company and we would do boy things. Shoot, watch action movies, listen to heavy metal.

When I blew the motor in my Z28, I replaced it in his garage with a 383 stroker.

We were always playing practical jokes.

Here is my favorite story.

He came over for dinner one Friday night. Raingirl was actually in town. We conspired as to what we would do.
You know those extended hoses, next to the faucet, to rinse the sink?
Our weapon.
So I wrapped a rubberband around it so when you turned on the water it squirted.
I had it aimed just right for center mass.
We knew she would go in there, so we waited.
About 30 minutes later, I was running the grill.
My hands got a bit greasy, so I went to wash my hands.
SQUIRT
My shirt is wet, I am trying to stifle the laughing as I just fell for my own joke. I didn't want to let on about the faucet. Tears rolling down my face, sounding like a choking goose, I gathered myself up.
Next Kadin spilled a little coffee on his hands, and I watched him go to the sink and turn on the faucet.
Center mass.
So now, we have both fallen for our own practical joke, crying laughing while trying to be silent, waiting on the intended victim.

I pulled him off to the side and told him I did the same thing 20 mins earlier.
We were besides ourselves trying to be quiet.

Finally, came dinner and Raingirl hit the faucet. She was confused as to what was wrong and did it again. WTF!

Okay, so Kadin and I are rolling, and explain to her what we had done and how we BOTH fell for it before she did.
Now she is laughing because, well, we are boys, and we can be fools.

I brought this up last weekend in the courtyard at the VA.
It is still a source of laughter, even in the worst of times.

This is the kind of friendship I have with the man.
He became my go-to guy. If anything happened to me, Raingirl was to call him for help.

But as life does, it reversed roles on us.
