No. It might cause a minor burble at worst. The 900 has a lot of inertia and is slippery. Engines take a few seconds to develop more thrust when near idle. The die is cast by 10 ft agl, or even 20 feet. Nominally the thrust is kept steady all the way down the last 1500 feet of altitude, and reduced to idle at 10 feet, but in windy conditions it might stay in longer or even to touch down. It is not like a Cessna where one jockeys the throttle and makes lots of flight control inputs. Keep the nose where it is from 50 feet down to 10 feet, pull thrust to idle, add a small pull on the elevator to slightly raise the nose, thump it on. Most of that thump is the impulse of the massive wheel/brake assemblies instantly spinning up. If the approach is on profile down to the 50 ft call, it should be good at 10 feet with minimal adjustments. If the wind shifts or gusts or dies at 10 feet after the thrust has been pulled back to idle, then the touchdown is going to be firm. But nowhere near destructive. So until we have the FDR data there are no red flags to me indicating the crew screwed up or that the wind conditions exceeded the aircraft capability. | |||

Corporate stupidity aside, at least one of the pilots on this fight was clearly male based on the radio traffic, and it looks like the female FA in the cabin did a great job evacuating the passengers after the crash. And while as a cop it pains me to say nice things about the hose draggers, it looks like they got out there quick and did a fantastic job keeping the fire suppressed as well. Outcome could have been much, much worse. | |||

Micro bursts are generally experienced with convective activity (thunderstorm) in the area. Most larger airports have equipment for detection of those and generally stop all arrivals til conditions improve. I didn’t study all the details. I did hear the F/O was getting IOE, initial operating experience, after the training program. The captain was a check airman, training pilot of sorts. Even if the first officer would normally fly, if the weather is crappy, but doable, they get the next leg. No I don’t need to hear all the stories of the right seater doing a better landing than the left. In general, the left seater has been around the block many more times. Just to back up a bit more, the last moments from 800, 500, 100’ AGL and so forth are critical. If things aren’t right, it’s ’go around’ time. The weather wasn’t great, but it also wasn’t on the ragged edge of required for a safe operation. Yes, glad they all made it. | |||
