Delta RJ900 crashes in Toronto
And the right main gone & wing root curved upward, seemingly to indicate it bent the wing off as it dropped & rolled over

In Juan’s video posted above, it’s only the last data point that suddenly changes. The 2nd to last data point was 480’ per minute decent.

No. It might cause a minor burble at worst.

The 900 has a lot of inertia and is slippery. Engines take a few seconds to develop more thrust when near idle. The die is cast by 10 ft agl, or even 20 feet. Nominally the thrust is kept steady all the way down the last 1500 feet of altitude, and reduced to idle at 10 feet, but in windy conditions it might stay in longer or even to touch down. It is not like a Cessna where one jockeys the throttle and makes lots of flight control inputs. Keep the nose where it is from 50 feet down to 10 feet, pull thrust to idle, add a small pull on the elevator to slightly raise the nose, thump it on. Most of that thump is the impulse of the massive wheel/brake assemblies instantly spinning up.

If the approach is on profile down to the 50 ft call, it should be good at 10 feet with minimal adjustments. If the wind shifts or gusts or dies at 10 feet after the thrust has been pulled back to idle, then the touchdown is going to be firm. But nowhere near destructive.

So until we have the FDR data there are no red flags to me indicating the crew screwed up or that the wind conditions exceeded the aircraft capability.

Any of you guys follow Captain Steve? He’s an active American pilot and his videos are fantastic.

Saw this vid earlier. Yes, he brings up an interesting point of how a wingtip strike would torque the wingroot in a way it wasn't designed to handle. I'm thinking that's a function of the swept-back design.

I got a lot out of both Juan Browne's and Captain Steve's analyses. Captain Steve's feels more personal, but there was a lot of useful data analysis in Juan's.

For years, I have worn long pants and real shoes (no sandals, flip flops, etc) when I fly. Sure, the odds of being in a situation like this are slim, but I bet the people who had to climb out of an upside down plane into a blizzard were glad they had real shoes on. . .

Thank God there was no fire in the cabin.

Interesting carrier, Endeavor Air. Seems they have a different business model than others, and are obsessed with "unmanned" flights.

I don't know about y'all, but I would not be comfortable flying on an airline that places more emphasis on crew members' gender, than on competent pilots.

Corporate stupidity aside, at least one of the pilots on this fight was clearly male based on the radio traffic, and it looks like the female FA in the cabin did a great job evacuating the passengers after the crash. And while as a cop it pains me to say nice things about the hose draggers, it looks like they got out there quick and did a fantastic job keeping the fire suppressed as well. Outcome could have been much, much worse.

Yes it's amazing that everyone got out alive and few injuries, x seems to be awash with the DEI and unmanned posts.

Either that or a female with a VERY low voice saying "Oh, fuck!"

Both could be true: for PR purposes Endeavor could be pushing the Pussy Galore angle, AND it could have been a competent PIC.

AND if we can get rid of the DEI shit we wouldn't have to have this conversation.

I thought that was the voice of the person recording it from the flight waiting to taxi....

That was audio from the aircraft holding short, that videoed the landing.

OK you guys got me. Duh!

But here's an updated video from Captain Steeeve showing and commenting on the video interview with a paramedic on this flight.

Reminds me how I always thought paramedics were not paid enough for the responsibilities they take on and the trauma they have to face.

Delta offering $30,000 to passengers who were on plane that crash-landed in Toronto

Excerpt:
"Delta Care Team representatives are telling customers that the offer "has no strings attached and does not affect rights," a Delta spokesperson said."

Micro bursts are generally experienced with convective activity (thunderstorm) in the area. Most larger airports have equipment for detection of those and generally stop all arrivals til conditions improve.

I didn’t study all the details. I did hear the F/O was getting IOE, initial operating experience, after the training program. The captain was a check airman, training pilot of sorts.

Even if the first officer would normally fly, if the weather is crappy, but doable, they get the next leg. No I don’t need to hear all the stories of the right seater doing a better landing than the left. In general, the left seater has been around the block many more times.

Just to back up a bit more, the last moments from 800, 500, 100’ AGL and so forth are critical. If things aren’t right, it’s ’go around’ time.
The weather wasn’t great, but it also wasn’t on the ragged edge of required for a safe operation.

Yes, glad they all made it.
