Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do. |

Thanks for your service, both military and civilian LE. I'm back on the street after being retired over 5 years from my first LE career. I'm almost 58, and I think I'm already too old for this. I applaud y'all for doing this job into your 70's, plus! Our 2nd in command is in his 70's, and he's out doing traffic stops and backing us up on a regular basis. I know he wants to retire, but he hasn't given us a hard date as of yet. Retired Texas Lawman

I got tore up, badly many years ago. I was the 3rd guy down an alley and we missed the bad man hiding. He drove me into a brick wall destroying my shoulder. I was out before I hit the ground. I spent a couple of years rehabbing and that proved to be somewhat of a blessing. I got in shape and stayed in shape. I am 74 and take no meds except for Vitamin BBP. Beef, bourbon and pork.

I'm proud for you that you made it through that many years of service to retirement. Well deserved. I'm curious, if you care to satisfy the question, about how your retirement was received by the sheriff and the administration in general. Was he/she sad? Respectful? Condescending? Do they share your concern for the vaccine, or are they all in for it? ________________________________________________ "You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. I've been retired. This was a way for me to give back. I had good mentors coming up. I did a lot of counselling, evaluating, training, being a good ear to new officers. I did it from 0 - 60 hours a weeks. Just depended on who needed the help. How did he take it? He knew it was going to happen. we met in his office. I laid my shield on his desk. He wouldn't shake my hand. I saw 1/2 gallon bottle of sanitizer on his desk. I walked out, shook hands with the adults in the room and left. I was and am not a supporter of the vaccine. Deputies and City Officers asked me what to do. I told them to search your own conscience and do what was best for you and your family.

Regardless of your OR his stance on vaccine, tells me a lot about the man that he won't shake your hand. 'Nuff said. ________________________________________________ "You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. Everyone doing this sort of work needs to know when it's best for them to leave. Sometimes people stay in because they don't realize they have alternatives and sometimes they stay beyond their time because divorce or other situations made it impossible for them to leave the profession. I was lucky. In my mid-50's, I retired after more than 30 yrs in law enforcement and applied the skills and knowledge I'd acquired in areas where I wasn't required to work nights or even a set number of hours. I'd earned the right to establish my own schedule and to balance it with the enjoyment that comes with retirement. I truly hope you have other things in life that interest you and brings you pleasure. Family matters. Making new friends, reestablishing friendships with those who you may have not kept up with (but enjoy the company of), and meeting new challenges will increase the probability that your retirement will be a long and happy one. Treasure the time you have and those you can spend it with!!! "I'm not fluent in the language of violence, but I know enough to get around in places where it's spoken."

Typical political spineless administrator, hook, line and sinker sold on the vaccine, fine, his choice, not having the respect for a long serving officer to shake his hand. Pitiful, but that isn't a boss I'd want if shit went sideways. Thanks and Congratulations enjoy retirement.

Good for you. At the end of the day, all you have is your word and your reputation. Don't compromise them for anything. I have a little over 28 years on the job right now. I plan on retiring in another 13 if everything goes well. I started out in my crappy, little home town. I wouldn't go back there for anything.
