Growing up I never had trouble buy liquor or beer when I was under 21. I guess checking the stores catches the long hanging fruit. I think most on the forum used a variety of methods.

A friend of mine who is an ABC investigator spends his time busting illegal alcohol production. He did get one goofy assignment though. He had to make sure the showgirls had proper butt covers in the casino night clubs.

So are you guys talking about the ABC guys saying that the LAW says card everyone regardless of age? If you send in someone to buy alcohol, they are of age, they don't get carded, that is now illegal? I get selling to minors but carding is the law?

I was once carded at a 7-11 store when I was 58 years old. I produced my drivers license which the person studied for a bit finally saying "we can't sell you the beer because your drivers license expired last week...... so now it's not a valid ID". I said "you realize I'm 36 years beyond 21 and now older than I was when it expired , right?"
"Sorry you don't have a valid ID".

It's probably not the cashier. It's probably the dumb ass middle management. Probably a policy about checking ALL ID's or get fired. The cashier doesn't give a shit and isn't going to risk their job over a sale that doesn't make her a dime if it gets made or not.

Lots of stores have secret shoppers that come in and try to see if the rules and policies are followed.

Dont blame the cashier for following the rules, blame the idiot that made the stupid rules.

Is that so hard?

Each of Tennessee's 95 counties has its own rules about alcohol sales. This is because they are "dry" by default unless they vote otherwise. And they check all IDs, period. Frequently at my cheapest favorite store, the cashier is not 21 yet, so they have to call a manager over.

I don't blame the employees for following the rules. If you've spent any time in just about ANY business you should know people are pretty dumb for the most part. Corporate sets very general rules to protect them and their business because you can't trust that people have common sense.

Yeah, yeah, we know it is the rules and the employee is just doing what he was told.

Can't we give our members enough credit to know that they know this and realize that this gripe is about the policy itself, and not the store clerk?

The grocery stores where I go do not ask me for ID. I am 60. Thank goodness for them having enough faith in their employees to not require them to look at everyone's ID.

Grocery stores and beer? I lived in TN for four years and you went to an ABC Store to buy liquor. TN is pretty regressive when it comes to alcohol sales. They seldom checked IDs when I lived in Knoxville, don't know about the tri cities area.

I dunno. Seems to be that people are complaining about the clerk not violating policy as if the common sense thing to do is sell to a 90 year old man without his ID (spirit of the law type thing) when they've been instructed that store policy is otherwise (letter of the law type thing), or even suggesting that store clerks who won't sell without an ID have somehow not been trained correctly, when my experience is that such an occasion generally indicates that they've been trained to do exactly that.

Am I reading these members wrong?

That's exactly what I'm saying. Yes, that is the law in some places. Yes, they do stings to see if you're carding people, not just selling to underage people. Also, the ABC guys don't make up the laws, and in some states, they aren't the ones doing this, it's the local police. That was the case where I worked when I was a store clerk selling alcohol and cigarettes.

He is 90. Going back out to the car is quite a workout. Seems a simple effort on the clerks part to calla manager and get an ok from management. Nobody goes the extra mile any more. My mom is in her 80’s and when we go out I am very cognizant of planning a reasonable outing. Telling her to go to the car for “policy” is ridiculous. The intent of the policy is to ensure underage sales aren’t occurring. The intent was complied with. And then some.

There has to be a reasonable solution other than making a guy approaching the century mark to hoof back out to his car and come back and wait in line again. I said there has to be but not in an unreasonable world I suppose.

I guess I’m curious where these places are that it’s a LAW that you have to card. I’m not saying you are wrong but I keep hearing this said but I can’t actually seem to find these places with my Google fu. Selling and serving to underage against the law everywhere. Carding being the actual LAW? Can we get some examples so I know what dumb ass part of the country to avoid? Lol

I think it's every bit as stupid as you do, and I agree that he shouldn't be carded or made to go get his ID. Truly. I'd never argue that things are the way they should be in that regard. In a perfect world, he'd have it on him, and they wouldn't even ask for it. When you boil it all down, it does stem from a lack of common sense: Many, many people over the years have sold alcohol to underage kids who bought booze even though they knew it was illegal (some of them long-grown and bragging about it in this very thread) and often enough, some of those kids got killed, or killed someone else in a spectacularly tragic manner that people said "there oughta be a law." So, we got laws. People (some of them in this very thread) enforce those laws. Those laws cost businesses megafucktons of dollars. Those businesses don't like it and put policies in place to prevent employees from selling alcohol to underage kids. It came full-circle, this whole shit out of a lack of common sense: You don't sell booze to kids: they're already stupid, and now you've given them liquid "don't give a fuck" and taken away what little ability they had to make sound decisions. So now common sense has been legislated and board of trustees voted right out of the equation and 90 year old guys get carded and everyone wants to point fingers, but I guess all we really have to do is keep a driver's license on us, which we ought to do anyway.

I was told in no uncertain terms that if King County (of Washington state) Sheriffs deputies send someone in to buy without a card, and I sold to them, that the store would get fined many thousands of dollars, and so would I. Depending on circumstances, jail time was a possibility as well. Now, if you want to research that and find that such isn't really the case, or wasn't back in 2018, that's fine: I wasn't going to test it just to ingratiate myself to some middle aged or elderly person who really needed a six pack. I cared more about keeping my pathetic job than I did irking someone with decades or a half century on me. No care. Zero shits.
