ARMY’S LATEST RIFLE

Thursday, members of the press were given a special demonstration on the newest battle rifle of the army, the “M1”. Eventually it is expected that the M1 will replace the aging Model 1903, which went into service that same year. The new rifle uses a special clip that holds eight rounds of ammunition. The clip is not removed when the cartridges are inserted in the chamber. NOV 1939

What is the soldier loading (trying to?) in the M1?
It appears to be a stripper clip—for the 1903? No Garand clips available for the publicity shot, but he had to be holding some sort of ammunition—?

As always, thanks for the latest series. Smile

Glad you like the photos.

Appears to be the standard 8-round clip to me, seen at an angle from the top and side. Or maybe not, not sure.

Yes, someone's mom and dad put in a lot of effort for those Jawa costumes and props. Some of those guns looked like they started off as the real thing, or at least pellet guns.

PHOTO SHOWS: Gen. Boatner shows Warang Du, a Kachin Chief, how to put a clip in the U.S. Army .45 cal. automatic pistol which Boatner has just presented to him because the Kachins have cooperated with the Allied effort. Chiefs who receive the pistols as gifts give their wives the empty cartridge jackets to wear in their ears. 11/4/43

This was an interesting caption, particularly the part about wearing the empty cartridges in their ears.

In looking at a Garand clip again, I believe you are correct. Smile

I can’t believe it is December already. Time flies! Thanks everyone for the comments!

SUBMARINE V-4 MAKES SUBMERGING RECORD. PORTSMOUTH, N.H. … Photo shows officers and members of crew of the submarine V-4, of the U.S. Navy as they appeared lined up on the submarine during a recent inspection. GOOD START FOR 1940 – Typical Florida hospitality intrigues young Miss 1940, portrayed by Lou Emma Reeser, of Lakeland, FLA., where the New Year comes in on a flood of grapefruit. 12-31-39

AND ONE MAN, WERMUTH, WAS AN ENTIRE ARMY BY HIMSELF – Capt. Arthur William Wermuth (shown with aide), one of the Battling ———‘s of Bataan, “absolutely accounted for” at least 116 Japanese with a 45-caliber sub-machine gun. After the Japs overran Corregidor, his wife was informed he was considered missing in action. Yesterday his wife received a telegram from Maj. Gen. James A. Ulio, adjutant general of the army, which said: “Information received indicated your husband is now a prisoner of war of the Japanese government in the Philippines.” – U.S. Army Signal Corps Photo. Dec 9 1942

PORTRAIT WHILE YOU WAIT – A pretty native girl on Makin Island eagerly awaits the portrait Capt. C.M. Sullivan, of Minneapolis, Minn. draws of her child. From the way mama clutches her own picture, it looks as though the captain is going to have to give up soldiering and take up art, in earnest, on the Pacific island where an efficient native grapevine is in operation. 12/18/43

TWO OF THE OLD SCHOOL — An old timer in the game himself, Bill Pickett, who has made almost 400,000 barrels since he went to work at Winchester in 1886, fingers his deer gun, a lever-action Model 94 that will be 50 years old this year. The carbine was the first gun built to fire cartridges loaded with smokeless powder. 12/12/44

HAPPY DAY FOR LITTLE FRENCH GIRLS – Four little girls of Drancy, France, smile happily as they hug the new shoes distributed to them by the American Red Cross relief workers to replace the shoddy, worn ones they are wearing. The children of Drancy were chosen for the distribution because they were considered the most in need of shoes. 12/31/45

DETROIT, DEC. 28 — GUN THAT SHOOTS AROUND CORNERS — Sgt. Donald D. Hector, of Muskegon, Mich., demonstrates how a newly developed barrel makes it possible to shoot around corners with a standard sub machine gun. The barrel, which fits on the Army’s standard M-3 “grease gun”, was developed at the Detroit Arsenal for use by tank crews and infantrymen. It fires a standard 45 caliber bullet at the rate of 450 rounds a minute. 12-28-1951

SIDEWALK SURFING WITH STYLE – Skateboarding, which started in the early 1960’s when kids in California and Florida nailed roller-skate wheels onto boards, has become a big business – and a serious sport. As the numbers of “carvers” and “boinkers” grows, concrete skateboard parks have been springing up all over southern California, Florida, and the Carolinas. Hundreds more are in the planning stages all over the map, a fact which tends to give the parents of devoted skateboarders a certain sense of relief: the parks may have their steep uphills and downhills, but at least the thrill of dodging traffic is removed.

Photo: If there is no skateboard park handy, an empty backyard swimming pool will do. DEC 19 1977

Great stuff!

Looks like pool-surfer boy has suffered a few bumps in the learning curve.

The photo of Captain (later Major) Wermuth prompted me to do a bit of research, so thanks in particular for that one.
An article about him (and others) in the Philippines and as a POW of the Japanese:
