A few things that always bugged me in a minor way in an enjoyable '80's film:

Why did the dad who owned the general store hang around?
He should have called his wife or headed out immediately to get her and try to get to the mountains as well. (Maybe he did, and got caught...)

Why didn't the USAF Colonel try to fly out one of the MiG's to make it back to friendly territory? At least one was gassed up and ready to go. Of course, one can also wonder why high priority medical equipment would be stored in an insurgent internment camp....

I know they were tired, and starving, ... and the movie was running long and needed to be wrapped up ... but as successful as the Wolverines had been, and experienced as they were at the time it seems an implausible tactical blunder to remain in the area of the serendipitous food drop. They had horses to help carry the goods.

Any other questions that have bugged others?

I've always enjoyed the movie even with it's 'issues'.

The mayor's kid swallowing the tracker and it still working was always a 'really???' issue for me.

As for stealing a Mig, it’s not exactly a one man Op. a You’d need someone on the ground to assist with the remote start and disconnect...

Not to mention that he'd need quite a bit of familiarity with that specific type of plane...

Just because he's a pilot doesn't mean he knows the tips, tricks, and procedures for every plane.

As discussed in the stolen plane thread from last week, it's not like simply hopping into a car, turning the key in the ignition, putting it in gear, and going.

(Further exacerbated by the fact that all the control labels and the checklists/manuals would be in Russian. Big Grin)

"First wave of the attack came in disguised as commercial charter flights same way they did in Afghanistan in '80. Only they were crack Airborne outfits. Now they took these passes in the Rockies."

"Infiltrators came up illegal from Mexico. Cubans mostly. They managed to infiltrate SAC bases in the Midwest, several down in Texas and wreaked a helluva lot of havoc, I'm here to tell you. They opened up the door down here, and the whole Cuban & Nicaraguan armies come walking right through, rolled right up here through the Great Plains."

They were still kids without any real training. They made a mistake.

Besides, they were up against a real professional counter-insurgency fighter.

for what its worth, too...it wasnt a Mig...it was a Yak-38 Forger, which was a VTOL, which would be quite a different plane to fly than the F-15 LTC Tanner would have been accustomed to flying. At the time there was no USAF equivalent

Do you kill the pig because he saw the fox NYET!

He was awesome.

We've seen in A-stan and Iraq how ineffective poorly-trained and equipped insurgents can be against professional soldiers with better training, equipment, and air cover.

Ummm.... There's a couple thousand dead American soldiers who might disagree with you. We will not win in Afghanistan just like we didn't win in Vietnam and the British didn't win here. Those poorly trained and equipped insurgents were mighty effective.

They are like cockroaches. Bomb the living piss out of them with every advanced weapon system you have and kill thousands of them. What happens then? More come out to play.

Afghanistan has been poorly trained and equipped for thousands of years, yet no one has conquered it.

Point being, the Wolverines did well in hit-and-run ambush setups. They did poorly against highly-trained counter-insurgency troops when they were cornered with nowhere to hide. JUST like in A-stan. I didn't say (or imply) that modern insurgents are useless; just that they aren't as good, on a one-for-one basis, as our troops. For every US/coalition soldier killed in A-stan, we got a hundred of them.

The only way they persist is because they have superior numbers. There were only about a dozen Wolverines; they didn't have 3000 reinforcements to make up their losses. Therefore, without effective recruiting, the Sovs/Cubans ultimately would prevail over them.
