SigMonkey is exactly right. When this was announced and I saw the reaches of both the outcome was pretty well predetermined, particularly given the age difference. The only way Mike had to make this stick was to close the distance and keep it closed and out box him, but he was way too passive at accepting the distance Jake set. I was pretty sure, in spite of the sound management by Netflix, that I was hearing boos as it went on. Mike was clearly there for the paycheck. A fighter that wanted to prove he still had it would have pressed, in the final round at least. He came out in the eighth and did nothing different. As time wound down he was content to wait for the bank teller to return from the vault. He hurt his legacy a bit with this one, but will laugh all the way to the bank. Boxing was also hurt by this, not that it needed much more done to sink it further. _________________________ NRA Endowment Member _________________________ "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. Looking at life thru a windshield |
As soon as I heard the Paul was wearing a $1,000,000 ensemble, yes that's the word they used. Trunks Shoes, gloves, who made them and how many diamonds. I knew that this was a show fight and not a real fight. Be on eBay before you know it.

Speling Champ |
I really expected Tyson to put Paul down within the first couple of rounds but as others have said Tyson’s age has just taken too much for the former champ. This fight did Paul no favors though. If Paul was even half as good as he thinks he is he should have given a much stronger showing. His performance was kind of pathetic actually. There’s already rumbling about a fix being in or some kind of choreographed exhibition but honestly it looked like a “never-was” taking on a long ago “has-been” and neither could bring any kind of A-game. Tyson was just too old and Paul just doesn’t have the talent. No fix but not a real fight either.

That's every fight of the Paul brothers. Either they fight legends that are way too old or they're fighting MMA grapplers in a boxing match.

Staring back from the abyss |
It was like watching a train wreck and not being able to look away. If it wasn't the disgusting spectacle of two "ladies" beating the ever-loving hell out of each other, watching Tyson (who looked about 20 years older than he is) was just sad. As much as I can't stand the guy I actually began to feel sorry for him (even with the Che Guevara tattoo). ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Fighting the good fight |
My thoughts exactly. Just phoning it in for the paycheck. As I said 8 months ago back on Page 1, like an aging actor resorting to starring in B movies just to pay the bills.
Exactly. They have lots of hype and clout with the "fight bros" on the interwebs, but limited skill, which means they can only tackle opponents with aggravating factors such as age or minimal boxing experience that also limit their skills. I think it was Joe Rogan who said a while back that Jake Paul would make a good bouncer at a rough and tumble bar (ala Roadhouse) but is a mediocre professional boxer. Edit: It wasn't Rogan. This is the clip I was thinking of: https://www.instagram.com/kfcradio/reel/Cm67N-_MIqB/

Yeah, this was disappointing. Ole Mike just didn't have the gas and just was trying to get through it with defense (which he did fairly well) but zero offense. Mike didn't seem to have the desire to get violent or maybe he just couldn't do it anymore. Paul either was not that great or he didn't want to hurt Mike. Great even fantastic promotion. Sad and disappointing but not surprising fight. One more thing, once the fight started, had no more buffering issues but even my wife commented on the seemingly low resolution. This may have been done to accommodate bandwidth. The wimmins fight just prior was actually pretty good albeit some may not agree with the decision.

Tyson was sucking air, his chest was heaving as he sat on his stool after the first round. It didn't get better for him and that's with two minute rounds. FFWIW they used extra padded gloves and they both had to drop their arms for periods throughout the fight. There was a moment here and there it looked like Mike might get after Paul but nope. Streaming through Spectrum, the picture looked like 480p sometimes, decent at others. It always looked to be a meaningless exhibition from the start of the hype and so it was. Wasn’t surprised in the least. If I didn’t already have Netflix, well I wouldn’t have paid. Like many, we had just some frail hope of seeing a grown ass man knock this little social media inthluencer down to the ground. It didn’t happen and like Rogue stated above, it was a publicity stunt from the very beginning. What was funny was hearing from my friend last night. He does the Door Dash Grub Hub, whatever, hustle at night. He told me he was delivering food to people who had their garages open, man caved out with multiple flat panels etc. People over at said house like it was a Thanksgiving dinner, cars parked all up and down the street. The streets were overfilled with idiots, traffic, not normal for a Friday night. According to him, this was July 4th, or December 31st, that’s how people were treating this fight. What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

In Odin we trust |
We had zero issues. Watched all the fights with no problem, though from reading through this thread it looks like I'm in the minority. As far as the fights themselves I thought the women's fight was far & away the best of the night. Taylor v Serrano was outstanding. Tyson still has the in-close punching power I think, but has clearly lost the lateral explosiveness we (those of us of a certain age anyway haha) grew up seeing. He can't close and explode anymore, and at 58 is no surprise. Had he caught Paul with one or two the outcome would probably have been different, but as much as a don't care for Jake Paul's showboating/ostentatiousness he was too smart for that. He used his strengths to his advantage and you can't fault him for that. I DID enjoy his entrance song. I don't know if it was an homage to Iron Mike & his appearance in The Hangover movie, but that's what it made me think of. I didn't like the rest of his entrance.....it felt like a WWE thing, and maybe that's more the point, eh? End of the day it was entertainment. _________________________ "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. I had zero issues up until the hype before the women’s bout and then after that it was awful. Reset the TV tried different devices constant buffering and the quality when it was not buffer was awful. Blocky and pixilated. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. I will be your brother, and I'll hold your hand. That’s the only reason I watched the chicks fights, seemed hyped up and IMO it didn’t disappoint. I didn’t watch much of the other fights, but I definitely thought the two chicks put on a good show, even a little bit of head butting drama haha. ...Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, was just a freight train coming your way...

Told cops where to go for over 29 years… |
Never been much of a boxing fan, but I tuned in just before the “big” fight. I know Netflix is getting a lot of grief, but I have to wonder how much of it was their fault vs. folks local ISP’s. I am on Ziply fiber never had any buffering moments and just one instance of resolution dropping for about 5-8 seconds or so. As for the fight itself, I saw it as a win-win for Tyson as long as he didn’t get knocked out and a lose-lose for the other guy. Tyson knocks him down and or out, he is a hero. Tyson survives without going down against some less than half his age and he gets everyone’s respect. Paul loses, a guy more than twice his age kicked his ass. Paul “wins” he beat a near senior citizen while in his own physical prime. Not exactly something worth bragging on. While not necessarily “choreographed”, I think there was likely a pre-fight “arrangement” between the two where they would both come out looking good and making lots of $$$. Paul’s “homage” to Big Mike in the last few seconds was a little over the top - I would like to have seen Mike smack the kid with an uppercut and put him on his back. So much for Paul’s record of knocking every opponent “down or out”. What part of "...Shall not be infringed" don't you understand???

I had a good time with the fight. Whatever was on Netflix was garbage, but the texting with my friends and discussions with them in person was cool. It gave us all something in common to talk about other than the fate of our great nation. It was a time of much needed relief. Beagle lives matter.
