Hmmmm.....I thought that when I clicked on the file and it opened a new tab that it was somehow directly linked to vinylengine and that because I was logged into them that I could see it. I'll have to try to send the file to redstone when I fire up the laptop again.

Redstone, it is the operators manual but has some maintenance information in there too. I'll send it to you tomorrow hopefully.

Petr,

I was able to register using my computer at work. I created an account and was able to download the manual.

Thanks so much for your help with this. It is appreciated.

My cleaning supplies came in and I jumped in to start cleaning albums . . .

Dang. My Dvorak 9th actually has a dent in it. looks like someone (probably me) dropped a pen or some other instrument on it.

but tonight I got to listen to Appalachian Spring.

thank you guys for all your help.

Also, I upgraded the cart to a conical, so far I am very pleased with it.

Hey guys,

I decided to post this here since I started my journey in this thread. There is referenced another thread on Vinyl but I havent found it.

Anyway, My MCS 6502 is not well. The bending of sound is back. Basically, after it runs for 8-10 minutes it starts phasing fast or slow just enough to bend the sound flat or sharp. To be honest I do not know if this is a transformer, electricity supply issue or if it is a motor / brush issue. There just isnt much information in the way of the MCS line.

I find myself just shopping for new TT's but I am attracted to the older ones.

I understand that my MCS was likely not engineered for 40+ years of service. It also appears it may be near the end Smile I am fine with that.

If I buy a used TT, will it be just as prone to this disposable element? I was looking at TT parts retailers and mot of it was about the cartridge (are people really building their own carts?) stylus, and belts.

I want to keep this under $500 so that is very limiting, especially with the classics. I am having fun. Just having to pump the brakes a little till I get this TT worked out. Right now I keep getting drawn to the AR XA or the Technics 1200 series.

Good to replace it ~ the MCS is not very good to begin with.

I would suggest getting a TT with a straight dynamically balanced Turn Table like Dual if you can find one.
S shaped statically balanced turntables are not as good of trackers.
True the Technics tables are very well built mechanically but the arm is inferior for fidelity, IMO.
Also match it with a good cartridge generally one that is higher compliant aka flexible for best results.
At least that is what we did when I was in the high end audio business (before computers) back-in-the-day. Eek

With the little bit of knowledge I have in this, look for a Dual if you want classic. There are people that can refurb it and have it running like new for the price range you are looking for. An older 10** or 12**, idler wheel drive is smooth as silk and the motor is quiet. Manuals are available and parts too, while some are harder than others to find. Lots of people have posted issues and fixes for most models that you can do yourself.

Thanks Petr, I just ordered a Dual 604 from a guy. It had pretty good reviews on vinyl engine, and it was a pretty good deal. Pretty excited.

Cool! Be sure he knows how to pack it for shipping. Was it refurbished, cleaned, or as is? If the price was right but needs to be worked on, there is a guy on vinylengine that can steer you in the right direction or other websites that are recommended on there too. However, if it's good to go, spin it right round!!

I recommend FixMyDual for purchase or service. I bought a 1229 off of ebay and had FMD perform a service. Then when I wanted a second record player I just bought one from FMD that had already been refurbished. Both have been performing as expected for the past eight years.

I also highly recommend the dust cover they make for these record players.

Petr and Marksman.

I have been pretty depressed so I haven't brought myself to post on it.

What I 'think' happened was the previous owner had/or did it himself, upgraded the audio out to RCA's (they are new) and there is a real bad 120hz ground loop. I cannot figure it out and have managed to make the sound even worse trying all the 'internet' suggestions. the sound is now 'quieter' on the right channel. Somehow I have increased the impedance on the cartridge wiring.

I contacted fixmydual but they have not emailed me back. I don't think they work on 604's anyway. Also, contacted a specialist down in Raleigh but he hasn't called/ or emailed me back either.
At this point, it is just sitting off on a side table, mocking me in its potential awesomeness. I wish I had actual electrical skills and could track the grounding loop down.

On a curious note, the ground loop responds to my hand moving towards the cartridge. (not touching) just approaching it from several inches away and the ground loop sound doubles in amplitude.

I just ran across this thread and read through it.
I know it is about turntables but do any of you have experience with or knowledge of QUAD ESL systems? I have a system that was my father's.
It has a pair of ESL 57 speakers, (2) QUAD II amplifiers, a QUAD tuner and an ELAC MIRACORD turntable and an AMPEX reel to reel.
Trying to decide what to do with it. It is not currently operational and I don't remember when it was last used. I DO remember listening to it as a kid and the sound was phenomenal.

Restoring all these components will prove to be expensive although many might say worth it given the sound the ESL57's can produce. The Quad II mono tube amps are quite worthy too. Those would personally be the ones I'd look to restore depending on costs. The others, not so much, as there are much more refined tuners and turntables on both the used and new market. The Ampex maybe if it is a high end 10.5" deck and you're really into reel-to-reel. Again a potentially expensive proposition.

Redstone, That stinks! On mine if I push the wires on the RCA jacks all the way I get a hum. I found a sweet spot and have not touched them.

On my Pioneer receiver I have a phono input that has the ground connection. Do you have your ground wire connected? At first I hooked mine up to the wrong post and had a terrible hum. It was dark and I thought I was hooked up to the right spot. I grabbed a flashlight and discovered my error.

Did you download the manual on vinylengine? There may be some tips in it.

Yeah I got the manual. It even had in there what do to address the grounding issue if the deck is converted to RCA's. Whoever did the conversion actually cleaned up the solder compared to some of the pics online. Changing the RCA's does seem to improve it but it is pretty bad and has that angry 120hz sound. The Turntable Doc in Raleigh finally got back to me and I think I will take it down to him and just leave it with him soon. His wife has stage 4 so they are spending as much time together that they have left.

I have been using the MCS and it is doing ok, I listened to all 6 sides of the new Iron Maiden album and just loved it. I also scored a U2 Rattle and Hum LP.

for now I will just work the Dual repair, I have even offered to trade it to him for one he has in his shop. I dont want to buy another online unless it is new or from a reputable person. Kinda hate it that I feel I got a bit taken.

Strangely, I am enjoying vinyl more than ever. Just loving it.
