The Sasha Baron Cohen thread made me think if there were any other formerly comedic actors/actresses who switched to serious roles and were good in them?

Tom Hanks is the prime example I'd say.

Another one that surprised me was this one with Adam Sandler:

It's considered a romantic comedy but this was a pretty serious role for Sandler.

Might be the reverse of what you're asking, but I remember seeing Leslie Neilson in a serious role and kindof laughing - because I'd only ever seen him in goofy roles. Maybe it was that classic SciFi movie - I've forgotten the name.

Robin Williams also had a few roles where he made for an excellent "creepy bad guy", like 1 Hour Photo or Insomnia.

I love watching comic actors as dark serious villains. Some of my favorites are Steve Martin in The Spanish Prisoner, Albert Brooks in Drive, Rodney Dangerfield in Natural Born Killers, and Steve Carrell in Foxcatcher.

NYT on Nielsen's death
"In keeping with his adopted comic persona, when Mr. Nielsen in 1993 published an autobiography, “Naked Truth,” it was one that cheerfully, blatantly fabricated events in his life.

They included two Academy Awards, an affair with Elizabeth Taylor and a stay at a rehabilitation center, battling dopey-joke addiction."

That sounds like great fun. I'm going to write my own obituary.
