I know its older. Looking for a good, deep RPG. Anyone play this or the sequel? Should I skip the first one and just do the 2nd? Don't weep for the stupid, or you will be crying all day

Laugh or Die |
Absolutely play these in order. Some of the best cRPGs I've ever played. Both story and gameplay wise. The sequel is an upgrade in every aspect of gameplay, so definitely play the first one first. ________________________________________________

Definitely worth playing. Check out Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous too. And Baldur's Gate 3 is set for release in a few more months.

Well, once he finishes PoE 1 and 2 and then P:WotR, August will only be a few more months. ![]()

I hope BG3 comes to console since I don't do PC gaming. I was hoping for Divinity 3 but that's not happening in the next decade. I loved 1 and 2. Don't weep for the stupid, or you will be crying all day

Pillars of Eternity was outstanding on PC. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work as an Xbox port. Play them on order. Both are great. Pathfinder is also good, but both games have some balancing issues issues and the campaign management can get tedious. They’re both worth playing as well. Baldurs Gate 3 better be amazing after 3 years in pre release…..

I agree, especially with Owlcat's first effort (Pathfinder: Kingmaker). It was still a good game despite its flaws, and I definitely think they learned a lot from that. Their second Pathfinder game Wrath of the Righteous addresses a lot of the quibbles I had with Kingmaker, though it's still not perfect. I agree that the campaign/kingdom management system is the weak point of both games. Many of the balancing issues with those two games have to do with the underlying Pathfinder 1st Edition RPG system, which is needlessly complex in its wide-open character advancement options, and as a result contains a lot of "trap" options that can eventually screw an unsuspecting player over, putting you hopelessly behind the power curve without realizing it until it's too late. If you're not totally familiar with the Pathfinder system and its class optimization strategies, it's helpful to read some of the online character creation/advancement guides to help guide how you create and level up your characters to stay competitive. Pathfinder itself addresses some of this in their recently released 2nd Edition, but both Pathfinder CRPGs rely on the older 1st Edition. (For those who don't know, Pathfinder started out as an semi-official spin-off of the Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 Edition system. In many ways, especially character creation/advancement, 3.5E was the most complex of the various D&D editions. Pathfinder then took it even further and made it even more complex and added exponentially more character options. So you ended up with an overly complex version of an already complex game system.) I'm excited to see what Owlcat can do with their third isometric CRPG that's due to come out next - Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader. It won't be based on the Pathfinder system.

I will give Pathfinder a look also, thanks for the recommendation. I also downloaded the old Bards Tale series ... I am old enough to remember playing those when they first came out... buying it at Babbage's on 5.25 floppys.. Don't weep for the stupid, or you will be crying all day
