I've had almost all my CDs in storage for 8 years it seems. Not any longer. Nostalgia I suppose. Plus, finding what i have on a streaming service is difficult. I kinda miss the CD ritual, not unlike the vinyl rituals but I don't need to clean a CD each time. Also, a soundbar/sub and a discman are more convenient. I have 50 new jewel cases so a little restoration can be done.

Apparently vinyl is making a resurgence, I'm thinking CDs might be riding on its coattails. So, i'm curating the collection to see if anything is worth passing on to a new owner or rediscover an old favorite.

I only have a couple hundred cds, not a wall full like I see in videos. I buy vinyl once and a while, maybe I'll start looking out for rarer stuff in the CD format. It's a pretty durable media (not the burned ones as much) and they still some pretty cool tech to play it.

I bought a bunch of records back in the '80s. Mostly heavy metal and picture discs.

CDs roll around and I found myself buying the imports, limited editions, and 24k CDs.

I also couldn't live without the fancy Mini-Disc head unit that cost a pantload back then, but thirty years ago it had enough bells and whistles that rival some of todays systems.

I don’t miss them, Spotify or Apple Music sounds just as good and is far easier and fun to manage.

I was cleaning my basement the other day and I found one of those CD sleeve album things full of old software from the late 90s and early 2000s. All of it went into the trash.

I listen to a lot of movie soundtracks and whenever an old movie gets an expanded soundtrack, the current deal with the AFM provides a discounted reuse fee only on CD and under 10,000 copies.

So I rip them to my computer in Apple Lossless and keep the physical CD around as a backup.

my Daily and work van do not have CD players , since they are relatively new,

I do have a CD player at home and in the shop that I rarely use,

so not really missing them, but when I do use them, I tend to ''find'' a tune or 2 that never seem to make it to the streaming apps, or even youtube

I don't stream music (or movies for that matter), I won't sign up for Spotify or any other services. I have purchased CDs since their first commercial availability in the 1980s, and I haven't stopped. I play them on my reference sound system for serious listening, and I also rip them into FLAC files and load them into a dedicated laptop/music server connected to the house ceiling speakers for casual listening.

I still buy CD's on occasion but I don't play them individually much but since the wife still has a CD unit in her car > it's there they get played.

No, I rip them all to FLAC and store them on a server (computer, NAS, large USB - all work fine). When ripped they have the exact same quality as the CD.

Then I stream locally to multiple devices in my home.
If I want them on my Digital Only car unit ~ I copy a batch to USB Flash Drives.
The rest of the time in the car (or home) I stream Hi Res from Qobuz with Android Auto.

I have all formats but prefer CD's as well. I listen to them on a vintage Sony player. 80's kid, I guess. I think CD's were the ultimate portable music format. I do still listen to cassettes and LP's... something about monkeying with the gear and listening to music go together.

I spent so much time, money, effort, and love on my CD collection, I'll never give it up.

I buy CDs very frequently.
I then rip them to a FLAC file and have them on a Plex Media Server. I can access them all from anywhere at anytime.

I still buy CDs. I listen to them in the car; sometimes on a player in the house. Aside from sampling things on Bandcamp and Youtube, more than 95% of my listening is done with CDs and vinyl. I have a fifteen year old iPod that I use occasionally. I had a newer iPod that I used more frequently, until it's battery swelled/failed.

My CDs are kept in three zippered "books" in the car.

I think physical music formats are perhaps more easily appreciated/adopted by folks who consume entire albums, rather than sporadic single tracks.

While dreaming of spending lottery money I wonder if a vinyl collection has much merit at all .

I see y.t. videos of people with 1000 albums and $200,000.00

Does it make sense for 90 minutes of listening ?
I don't think so for me.

I still buy cds used. I rip them and transfer to a tablet and my phone. I can then play music anywhere via aux cord or Bluetooth.

It’s one of the reasons I don’t use an iPhone, they don’t have an expandable memory slot. I use an A series Samsung phone that has a memory card in the slot.

I agree. Some people get hooked on collecting. I have a very small vinyl "collection", and a modest equipment stack with good headphones. I am hooked on the music, and the vinyl listening process is enjoyable to me. Over the past couple years I have been selling much more than I've been buying. I have made a deliberate decision not to "collect" vinyl. I want every album I own on vinyl to be one that has unlimited replay value for me personally.

There is no way someone with 1000+ albums loves each and every one of them. They love their collection; not the music.

All this translates to the CD format too, of course. Though I do think the CD format lends itself more to a passive consumption, and therefore one might not feel the need to be so discerning.

I rarely buy CDs these days, and I certainly won't fork out the inane sums asked for a 'new' vinyl LP. My hearing has degraded to the point that "hi-fi" no longer has any particular meaning to me. I might add that there's nothing more sad than revisiting an old hardcopy disc and not recognizing the sound quality emanating from the speakers or headphones from the one embedded in my mind's ear and gray matter years if not decades earlier.

Besides, for me streaming has proven itself to be more than good enough sonically, and FAR cheaper and way more expansive. For the monthly cost that's less than the price of a solitary CD album I have at my disposal a humongous 'library' to appease my musical interests and curiosities with.

Winner winner, chicken dinner at this point of my life.

EDIT: I will admit that there is some things I do miss: the liner notes and the impact of great album artwork, especially with vinyl LPs. More than just sometimes I'd like to know who the players are that I'm listening to.

Your assumption is dead wrong.
For many of us growing up, it was the only format (primary).
Therefore the "collection" increased over time.
It does not mean we do not love music.

Now, of course with the introduction of digital media ~ the format and delivery has changed.
Digital makes music much more accessible through streaming, ripping of CD's and cd's themselves are more convenient than vinyl.
Physically, playing vinyl is much more difficult and in all honesty I haven't played mine in years.
I will revive it though, sooner than later.
However, under certain environments it is special.
But do not mistake any of the above with a lack of interest in the music.
If you are young then most likely you will not understand any of the above.

I didn't say the collector doesn't appreciate music. I meant the collector may not love every album represented in his collection.

I am young, relative to many of the members here, but I am old enough to have moved on from much music I once thought I appreciated. If all the music I was ever into was represented by a vinyl record (or CD) in a collection, it'd be a sizeable collection, and I could probably purge about half of it. Tastes change/evolve, and I don't care to keep around something I don't fancy anymore, for the sake of the collection.

Tastes change, tastes wain or it one may not just be in the mood for that genre at the time.
It's why we collect as you say, you never know when you might go back to it.
The music doesn't have to be disposable.

Yeah, thought of selling off some especially the already ripped CD's but not really important.

Music and ammo hording are related, thank God I don't have room for more cars.

please tell me more about the Plex thing,

I do have most of my CD's downloaded on an old desktop and also on Itunes, on that desktop,
and load up my old old , well old, Ipod touch for the car, and the tiny (nano??) that I clip on my hat when cutting grass etc,
