Ok, this is my favorite movie of 2022, and I haven't even seen it yet.

It is based on the book of the same title, about the first black US Navy fighter/carrier pilot in Korea. The book was AMAZING, and I cannot wait to see the movie.

Trailer was in the previews for Maverick, looks promising, hope it lives up to the hype.

It's VERY good.

Mrs. Sigmund and I just got back. Flying scenes are outstanding, many are CGI but it's damn good CGI. Acting and plot are also very good, it's not just for av geek guys.

I'd forgotten about this one. Will have to see if it's on streaming options, as getting to the theater is tough with 3 kids.

He played Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard (or maybe John Glenn) in a brief role in "Hidden Figures."

IMDB now requires a subscription to view previous films. Mad

Sweet! The “whistling death” was one of my favorite planes from WWII next to the P51 Mustang & hard hitting P47D Thunderbolt.

Movies based off very good books are promising. Sure, hollyweird could still f it up but it reduces the likelihood when the source material is a very good book.

John Glenn was also a pilot...of a Corsair no less.

I look forward to seeing him in "Top Gun - H_NGM_N" in the year 2058.

Call me when they can tell the story without the identity politics. "The first black..."? I do not care. Tell me what the man did, not what the black man did.

Well, the story is about a couple fighter pilots flying Corsairs during the Chosin Reservoir fight. The book had a perspective from Army guys on the ground, and I hope the movie does, too. I guess the fact that the guy was the 'first black. . .' is somewhat irrelevant to the main story, but there were some amazing stories in the book due to the fact the guy was black.

Right before they shipped out, the squadron was in a posh California hotel drinking. The waiter took everybody's drink order, but ignored the black pilot. The squadron commander called him on it, and the waiter said the hotel does not serve blacks (I guess they figured they were being generous in not throwing the black pilot out). The black pilot got up and walked out, since he was used to the bigotry. The squadron commander was PISSED and he and all the other pilots stormed out and would not give that bar any business.

I have not read the book, but I saw the movie a couple days ago and it did not push a liberal or woke agenda. The two main characters are black and white pilots, the black guy gets a tad more screen time since his family plays a part in the story. The white guy is single.

The event Hound Dog mentioned is not in the movie, though there is a similar incident on shore leave in France where a doorman initially refuses to let any of the pilots into a casino.

As I said in my earlier post, I enjoyed the movie. It was not a lecture on racism.

We just saw it and enjoyed it (sort of).

I say sort of because in one scene, they lose a pilot while at sea. They had to clean out his locker and send his belongings home. I lost a fellow Marine at sea (Persian Gulf) and I was there when they cleaned out his locker to send his belongings home. That was in 1994.

We lost another marine in 1996 to a helicopter crash (Deserts of Iraq & Kuwait this time) and I was taken back to those times when we couldn't stop to mourn for our friends but had to just carry on with the job. And we weren't even at war. I observed one of the pilots in the movie lamenting at how they were losing friends and there was no active war (at that timeframe in the movie). We took an hour to have a memorial ceremony for them on the ship, but other than that, it was back to work.

I didn't feel the movie was preachy at all but all the characters showed perseverance and camaraderie with the others in the squadron, regardless of skin color.

If the movie was woke, they would have portrayed all the white characters as racist bigots. This movie does have some instances of random people mistreating the main character, but the movie focuses more on everyone working together, despite their differences.

I found the movie to be more unifying than anything else. Nobody walks around ashamed or guilty of who they are or what they are and I didn't feel that the movie was trying to make me feel guilty for not being a minority. I thought Dunkirk and 1917 were better movies, but I still enjoyed this one and I'd watch it again.

Seems this movie had a short run at the theater close to me; it's no longer listed for showing. Too bad...wanted to see it on the big screen, but now I'll order/rip the Blu-Ray.

Watched this last night.
The planes were cool...
The flying was cool...
The war/combat scenes were cool...

The story... meh.

<spoilers below>

If the movie is to be believed, this fellow had exactly two combat missions.
In the first one, he went and disobeyed a direct order from his commanding officer.
In the second one, he got shot down and died.

Seems like a pretty lackluster career to me.
And he got a medal for it.

According to Wiki, he flew 20 missions...

Here is a good video of truth vs embellishment...

He did not bomb the bridge, but he did knock out AAA during the bridge attack.

The scene where they shoot down the Mig is made up, but there was an instance of a Mig being shot down by another pilot in a separate instance during the Korean War.

The Paramount Plus streaming service has Devotion already. I watched it today and really liked the movie, but then again I knew of the story already.

We must've seen different movies. I watched two hours of racism and its angry victim, interspersed with some cool flying.

Agree with creslin. Meh.
