"Srsly?", I thought. Sure enough:
quote:
The film, a post-apocayptic [sic] drama ... was produced by Higher Ground Productions, the company founded by former US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.

That, right there, would incline me to taking a pass. Then there's...

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Leave the World Behind boasts a critics score of 75 per cent positive, while the audience score lags at just 42 per cent.

It's generally been my wife's and my experience that the more enjoyable movies are those with those kinds of numbers flipped

2⅓ hours long? It's gotta be a damn good movie for us to sit through a movie that long, and this doesn't sound like it qualifies.

Quotes above from Leave the World Behind shoots to No 1 on Netflix – but viewers lodge complaint on social media (independent.co.uk)

The main reason why I refused to deal with Netflix.

Oh, this was one of those movies that felt like a way overlong Black Mirror episode. Makes sense since the writer-director is the creator of USA's Mr. Robot series. I think I liked 1996's The Trigger Effect more. I sure prefer Julia Roberts in this rather than her adorable rom-coms of yore.

I think my main problem is that you have to watch mannered yuppies trying to be civil with each other during the whole runtime. They're not that sympathetic as characters. I'd rather watch them tear each other to shreds. The director tries to keep things interesting with all these gimmicky camera angles and movements, but that gets a little much after awhile.

Still, in reference to Farrah Mackenzie's character, I'd rather watch this than Friends!

‘DON’T TRUST WHITE PEOPLE’ – Theme in New Obama Netflix Film

A new Netflix thriller about a cyberattack on the United States that cripples the nation includes a subplot about how bad white people are. Barack and Michelle Obama were heavily involved in the project.

The film, “Leave the World Behind,” tells the story of a cyber apocalypse that leads to civil war. A wealthy black man and his woke daughter are stuck in a mansion with a “privileged” white family from New York City.

“If they world falls apart trust should not be doled out easily to anyone especially white people,” the daughter said.

That was the only specific mention of white people — but the characters conveyed disdain for white folks through looks and mannerisms. The message was very clear.

The bigger the churn is, the smaller the tribes get. Did I like the disdain for whitey? No, but would I expect it? Absolutely.

This will always be so, until, as South Park parodied, everyone is a banal shade of brown. That only solves the color differences though, we all know that we can always find ways to hate the other person on demand.

Was the movie great? No. Did I like a few things/moments? Yes. The dialogue near the end with Kevin Bacon actually said quite a lot - I thought. *Shrug* maybe I'm just more easily entertained?

It is built into our dna. Though I think what we generally really key in on are cultural differences rather than racial appearances, it is typical that a different race also has a different culture. It's why we all have that story of "I have a _____ friend". That friend is substantially the same as us culturally, so we don't react to their different race.

It all stems from the first million or more years of our evolution when scarcity was everywhere. We competed with the other groups for survival. In most cases those others were of the same race, just a different tribe and thus perhaps a somewhat different culture.

Race baiters today are hooking into that instinct hardwired in our brains. The multi-culturalists also do so knowing that we will resist others in our midst. They have created a false narrative based on race for their own profit.

Evil people!

Para’s screen cap/quote above, isn’t that the truth. White people are the only ones you can do this bullshit with. Like any of us had any control over our parents, country where we were born, whatever. Life is a got damn dice roll, or a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get. IE we have no control.

Then there is another acceptable group you can be biased towards, and ridicule. Old/elderly people. If you say some shit against LBGTQ+ blah, ass in a sling. Towards some race, ass in a sling. Old, white, or both, perfectly acceptable! That’s called hypocrisy folks! Social media apps have programmed into gen z, that older generations, baby boomers, gen X, are the cause of all the problems in the world and gen z knows better, are smarter, etc. You mean this generation who doesn’t want to work, and if they do they want to be paid like an experienced professional. And many of them think they are going to be an inthluencer and never have to work. Roll Eyes

I agree with Ronin, there were so many non-sensical plot lines in this movie that never played out. Multiple "Checkhov's gun" that never appeared in the third act (and the one that did was weak). Among a slew of good actors, Mahershala Ali was the only one doing a decent job (IMHO). Direction was awful. Score was jarring at times. Hell, Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin is a friggin masterpiece in comparison.

It appears Obama had creative input on the script, influencing the narrative of the film.No wonder it is a piece of shit.

The first 15 or 20 minutes was kind of trying for me... totally boring ... now I'm about halfway through and kind of enjoying it... once you wrap your head around the point that 'Julia' and her husband as well as her children are idiots... it kind of works... I thought the Tesla attack was pretty funny... still can't quite figure out why a commercial airliner would fly straight into the ground just because it lost the GPS signal....
