Solid movie. I don't know how realistic it was in an actual UCMJ standpoint but it was well-acted. Movie trivia - I seem to recall reading Demi Moore was pregnant during the filming... she was a not hard to look at back then that's for sure ... ------------------------------- Proverbs 27:17 - As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

I've always been inclined to argue that Jessup was the true hero of that film, which was a very well written tragedy. Thoughts? -Rob I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888 A=A

He did the wrong thing for the right reasons. It really wasn't his fault that the dead guy had a rare undiagnosed medical condition. Every other Marine on that base would have been fine. Of course, that medical condition lead the dead guy to having all his physical performance problems. Not really Jessup's fault, but he WAS responsible for his death. And the military tries, at least, to hold people responsible for their actions. And, the Code Red WAS an illegal order. So, Jessup did violate orders. That's why Kevin Bacon said he had to go arrest Kiefer Sutherland - because he carried out the illegal order. Also, it negatively portrays the Marines. The 'good guy' (Cruise) is the black sheep character that doesn't really fit in with all the other 'military' guys. And the two Marines on charge are idiots. The black guy is slow and is portrayed as excessively hung up on his whole "Duty/Honor/Country" mantra, while the skinny white guy is a low-functioning retard. He has to have everything explained to him. He doesn't understand why he is even imprisoned. They mentioned that he wanted comic books to read in jail. The real 'hard-charging' Marines are the bad guys - Jessup and Kiefer. They are educated and uphold the traditional military image, but are responsible for Santiago's death. I didn't catch this at the time, but I read something that pointed all this out. Still a great movie, IMO. It has some of the best quotable lines in cinematic history - that "Stand on a wall" speech is epic. And, IIRC, in the opening bit where Demi's chest walked past the rifle squad, that rifle routine was performed by the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. Love the scene where he first has lunch with Jessup. "I can deal with the bullets and the bombs and the blood. I don't want money and I don't want medals but what I do want is for you to stand there in that faggoty white uniform and, with your Harvard mouth, extend me some fucking courtesy. You've gotta ask me nicely." I'm gonna vote for the funniest frog with the loudest croak on the highest log.

Sounds about right.
I thought he was going to arrest Kiefer for perjury. Or did he specify beyond, "I have to go arrest Kendrick"?
No kidding, but remember, it was a play and playwrights are almost universally libtards. -Rob I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888 A=A

I suppose the perjury charge is what they were shooting for. He would still be on the hook for executing an illegal order, though. . . Fear God and Dread Nought Admiral of the Fleet Sir Jacky Fisher

"And the hits just keep ooooon comin'..." Well technically Kendrick didn't order the code red.....Jessup did, so Kendrick could probably dodge a perjury charge. So the only thing I can surmise is that they're going after Kendrick for obstruction of justice, conduct unbecoming (following an illegal order as Hound Dog pointed out), or some such other charge. But.....IANAL. "If you’re a leader, you lead the way. Not just on the easy ones; you take the tough ones too…” – MAJ Richard D.
