for years Ive claimed to dislike an not appreciate rap and or hip hop. but in the last 1/2 hour I have seen a dozen videos that claimed to be one or the other. is there a difference between the two ? My understanding would be hip hop is softer rap. 80s ballads vs deathmetal My answer....Who cares?

Yes, no, it depends. It's a hotly debated topic in some circles, with no clear nor widespread consensus. For all intensive porpoises, in anything you'll ever encounter, there's no real difference. In some contexts - some folks speak of "Rap" while thinking "Gangster Rap", and then assume that "Hip-Hop", then, is all of the "Non Gangster Rap". But it's not really true. It's a lot like nerds arguing over "Tactical" gear versus "Military" gear. Mostly pointless. Personally, I think of it like this... Rapping is what they're doing, like Singing - but different. And Hip-Hop is the music Rappers make with their rapping. Basically. Some old school Rap artists disagree. Most fans don't give a shit enough to separate them.

Jay-z is hiphop, ice cube is rap. Bonethugs is rap. What man is a man that does not make the world better. -Balian of Ibelin Only boring people get bored. - Ruth Burke

I guess. ^ In reality, the inverse s true. Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) is an a actual gangsta from Brooklyn (former successful crack dealer), turned rapper, who built an empire - earnings wise (100+ million records and 21 grammys) using the actual skills he learned on the street selling crack, they say. Ice Cube is a dude named O'shea Jackson who likes weed, went to highschool in Woodland Hills Cali with Jason Bateman, and went to college. He just raps about being a Gangsta sometimes, but isn't (despite being partially credited w/ inventing "Gangsta Rap").

Not to me. I consider them both to be noise. "In God We Trust"

My rule of thumb is that Hip-Hop is more musical. Rap (to me) is pretty much just what it sounds like, “rapping” without musical accompaniment, or with mostly just percussive elements from bass, drums, and a turn table or two. I may not be right, but it works for me _______________________________________________________ despite them

No. There is good and bad. There are so many genres and sub genres of it that it cannot be explained easily. Just explaining say De La Soul or Mos Def, Guru, KRS, to say the trash that comes out of the south, with horrible beats and just some dude repeating a hook, is difficult. Like most forms of music there is good and bad. And the bad makes up the majority of it. If one heard TRAP I’d understand why you think all of it is the same and awful. TRAP is terrible. This. I like rap/hip hop. But typically something older or more obscure modern. But Trap is awful. Train how you intend to Fight Remember - Training is not sparring. Sparring is not fighting. Fighting is not combat.

traditionally, rapping is one element of hip-hop culture, the others being tagging (graffiti), break dancing, and DJing/spinning. I'm gonna vote for the funniest frog with the loudest croak on the highest log.
