I’m may be the only one but now that I’m going through my second divorce, which lasted 20+ years, I’m finding more comfort from easy going rock from the 70’s and early 80’s, BeeGees, Little River Band, Christopher Cross, etc. It’s the music of my youth having been born in 67. It brings back vivid memories, sights, feelings, and even smells sort of. I don’t see my 82 year old father listening to doo wop sock hop type music from his youth. While I’m going through this divorce, I’m living in our camper on the Hiwassee River amongst the hills and rivers and the easy going yacht rock type music is about all that soothes. When you ask friends to associate me with a band from any genre they usually say AC/DC. Whattya think? Go get a brain scan? Lol

My main six on SiriusXM are The Bridge, Yacht Rock, The Blend and 60s, 70s and 80s.

Now that Gus Lloyd retired I don’t find myself listening to the Catholic Channel much anymore so Yacht Rock has taken the #1 played station on Sirius XM for me.
It had been a solid number 2 for a while.

I never heard of Yacht Rock. What is it, or am I missing an inside joke? Eek

The phrase appeared maybe 20 years ago describing 1970s early 80s mainstream soft-rock music- The Doobie Brothers (w/ Michael McDonald), Ambrosia, Christopher Cross, Pablo Cruise, The Little River Band, Gerry Rafferty, etc. I was never a big fan of these type of groups/artists, at the time I was more steeped into Led Zeppelin, Ted Nugent, Boston, etc. and soon into punk rock with The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Talking Heads, Devo, etc.

The one thing I disagree with is lumping Steely Dan in with these soft rock artists, IMO there was a subversive, darker element to their music. Unlike the others, I bought Steely Dan records. SD made almost impossibly polished music, with very sophisticated musicianship, but mixed in with street hustlers, drug addicts, failed dreamers, etc. and a soundtrack of sometimes unconventional chord arrangements and time signatures. Steely Dan ain't Christopher Cross.

Agreed on Steely Dan, but for whatever reason they tend to be lumped in with Yacht Rock, specifically the Aja album,

Sorry to learn of the end of your marriage of 20+ years.

I find that I enjoy music of my youth as it returns me to a place and time when my life was in front of me. I could do anything I wanted. I could be whatever I wanted to be. In your emotional trauma, this music may bring you back to those happier times, when life beckoned you forward.

I confess too on listening to Yacht Rock. Got started when a friend recommended the Yacht Rock parody series on YouTube. Hilarious.

Thank you! It certainly brings me back to those better days. Someone listed a bunch of bands in the thread and they were dead on. Ambrosia, Pablo Cruise, Little River Band etc. Even the BeeGees. I amy have to look into Satellite.
