Watched and enjoyed it. Especially the Tank assault! I did not see anything PC/woke.

Sounds like you watched it with the dubbed British English audio track turned on, instead of the original German.

Yes, seriously. There are multiple audio tracks. You can click on the little speech bubble icon within the movie/show to pop out the menu to change audio languages, or on some platforms there's an Audio & Subtitles submenu available for a title before you start playing it.

It's a German production, made with German actors speaking German. So the original audio track is in German (as noted within the audio menu), with English subtitles available.

Thanks, since I don't speak German and wasn't aware of that, I watched the default version in my market.
That does explain the accents although German accented actors speaking English might have been a better choice.
The US market must be the largest for this Netflix production I would guess. That also explains the favorable treatment for the German diplomats too.
I guess that's what I get for skipping the opening title sequence to save a bit of time.

I watched it with German audio/British subtitles. Enjoyed the film and story.

I didn't care for the soundtrack. The three note cord was off-putting to me. Too industrial and modern.

A thought that crossed my mind was how long did it take to get the trenches built? Then I get curious about how/why/when did they start the construction of them? Wouldn't the other side have fought against them being built? Were they built behind a line that then allowed the front line to fall back to them? I wouldn't think that each side would show up and start entrenching without the other side trying to stop it. But then at one point battles were fought by simply lining up and marching toward one another.

Similar thoughts about the tunnels in Viet Nam....

Do a search for specific trench questions and you’ll find lots of info.
About 35,000 miles were built, 1/3 by the Allied Powers and 2/3 by the Central Powers.

It was okay. I didn't think it was great. The CGI was decent but...

The characters weren't well developed and didn't really seem to connect. The cast was much smaller in this one so you don't really experience the true weight of loss you do in the 1930 version, seeing classmate after classmate fall.

Overall the 1930 version is a much better movie. The characters are richer, more fleshed out. You see the schoolkids become soldiers, then become veterans over time. In the Netflix version they join right out of school, are given uniforms and sent to the front. Two scenes later most are acting like veterans.

The battle scenes in the Netflix one were graphic but somehow lacked both the humanity and brutality of the 1930 version.

The deaths of both Paul and Kat were far more poignant and impactful in the 1930 version. Here it just feels off to the story.

I wish I could put into words how much I miss practical effects

I remember reading the book in junior/high school - sometime back then. I don’t remember anything about it now.

Wondering if I should read the book again first. And then watch the various versions. I found three: ‘30, ‘79, ‘22. ‘30 needs payment so maybe just the latter two. Recommendations or doesn’t matter?

Just watched it tonight and agree with everything written. I’ve only previously seen the 1930 version, so I can’t comment on the 79 TV movie. I’m disappointed they completely omitted the scenes with Paul going back home on leave that were in the book, as well as in the 30 movie. Those scenes were powerful because they showed how Paul felt more “at home” with his comrades in the front than actually at home. Also, the scenes about the negotiation of the Armistice and with the German general who wanted to keep fighting were things invented for the 2022 movie. The book and earlier movie ended about a month before the Armistice. Also, the deaths of Paul and Kat (especially Kat) were really wasted in this movie. I understand what they were trying to do with the German general, but he just came off as too much of a cartoon villain. It’s not a bad movie, although a little slow in places, but I’d encourage people who watch this to also seek out the 1930 movie for comparison.

I would like to see this movie but we dumped Netflix shortly after this thread.

The WSJ review of this movie also mentioned the added scenes.

The book as written was a masterpiece...I can't imagine the ego of someone who thought it needed bits added onto it. Roll Eyes

I was entertained, some of the acting was phenomenal

I was confused for a bit, they are newbs deep in the shit and the next scene it looks like they are in the rear echelon, come to find out it's two years later. I must have missed the timeline updates

Huh, I'm surprised I missed that one. I have read several of Remarque's books. My favorite being "Arch of Triumph." It was the first time I heard mention of Calvados. I tried some once. I liked it.

Finished it today. The information given at the end of the movie struck me like a hammer. As I recall, 3 million soldiers lost their lives in France. The trenches began to be constructed in 1914 and 4 years later had moved very little.

There was a bit of text detailing the time jump before Paul and Kat hitch a ride on the truck to the farmer's compound where they steal their first goose.

*May contain spoilers*

I watched it in chunks but finished yesterday. It really does tell the story of a soldier well. The motivation to join up and be a part of the cause. The journey of seeing reality versus expectation. The things out of character you will do in desperation. The madness of the old men who send boys to fight even if it is 15 minutes before the armistice.
I'm thankful I never had to experience such things. I'm thankful for those that did and for the life their sacrifice allows me to live.
It's a good movie but it bummed me out.
