They haven't tried to remake this, have they? Only imitate or be influenced by? It's just great. It's how I know I'm officially old, because I'd rather watch ancient shit like something that came out the year before I was born Arc. ______________________________ "Like a bitter weed, I'm a bad seed"- Johnny Cash "I'm a loner, Dottie. It’s a fine movie with a great cast. It’s decades since I read the book (author : Trevinian) but I recall it as being equally entertaining.

Eiger Sanction is a classic. Maybe not the most coherent plot, however the action scenes are great. For many years I was a very avid rock climber and mountaineer -- the climbing work is generally done pretty true to form. A primary technical failure is Gorge Kennedy's final ascent of the Totem Pole, with Eastwood's belaying. Eastwood did some high quality climbing in the movie. The north face of the Eiger is a seriously dangerous climb. Typical loose limestone of the Alps, which I experienced first-hand while doing sorta-alpine climbing in southern France. Many years ago, I skied at Grindelwald/Wengen/Murren for a week. I just had to traverse out from the highest lift to the base of the Eiger's north face -- I was barely able to touch it with the tip of my ski pole. We skied right by the Kleine Scheidegg hotel, but we never went in for lunch. I know most of the movie by heart. I haven't watched it in awhile, but I try to catch Eiger Sanction when its on. - "We have beer." And then, "I thought you'd draw the line at hauling ice."

This always makes me think of the German movie “North Face” (Nordwand), an excellent film about the first successful climb of the North Face. Very close to historically accurate, I believe. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

I was seriously into rock climbing and in college when the movie came out. It was a big deal in our climbing club and we all went to see it tied together with our harnesses on… Oh the old days… ------------------ Eddie Our Founding Fathers were men who understood that the right thing is not necessarily the written thing. -kkina

I'm a huge Trevanian fan. Read all his stuff, plus all of what little is known about his personal life. Trevanian was horrified at the movie. A climber died in the filming. There's a tiny footnote about his feelings regarding it in Shibumi. The movie led me to the book and his other featuring Hemlock, the Loo Sanction. I found The Summer of Katya the most "disturbing" of his work. I too enjoyed the movie but I believe his estate has the rights bottled up so that there will never be a remake. There have been efforts to bring what I believe to be his best work, Shibumi to the screen, but the effort has never gotten to actual production. __________________________ Writing the next chapter that I've been looking forward to.

Shibumi was definitely Trevanian's masterpiece. I can just see Keanu Reeves as Hel in a film adaptation. Summer of Katya is the sweetest love story I've ever read (not that I've read many)- and also the most disturbing novel in general.

ronin. That is the good stuff. Even the soundtrack is incredible. I found myself tracking down "Where Eagles Dare" the other day. Frick me that is a good movie. This business will get out of control.
