Apparently died from COPD and other respiratory issues, but the guy was a lifelong coke/crack addict until six years ago. I'm surprised he lived this long. But in the late 60s-early 70s, he revolutionized black rock music by being one of the first to incorporate an entire musical band. And his band were awesome players, he had some excellent hit songs, I had a few of them on 45s as a kid.

Loved Sly and the Family Stone. Yeah, perhaps not a great role model, but man that funk music!! My sister turned me on to them in 1968 - I was 11 -. I might have danced like a monkey on crack, but it's so infectious........
