| Eating elephants one bite at a time  |
For 40+ years I thought this song was a Pink Floyd song. This song was released the year I was 10. Music wasn't a huge thing for me at the time. When I did hear this song and pay attention to it, it was likely the late 80s or early 90s. While I have two Pink Floyd albums (The Wall and Momentary Lapse of Reason), I was and still am a very casual listener of the band. The way Lunatic Fringe was done reminds me of Pink Floyd and until a few weeks ago, I actually thought it was Pink Floyd. Anyone else in the same boat or am I solo on this? Does anyone else have a similar story with another song/band? | ||

I never confused 'Lunatic Fringe' w/ Pink Floyd, but ever since seeing Vision Quest, I think of it as a pump-up, motivation song. | |||

I heard this song on FM radio, and typically back then in the 1970s they did not rattle off the name of the song and artist until maybe 4-6 songs later, and for awhile I thought it was Peter Frampton, not realizing it was Supertramp. Same. One of my favorite movies of all time because Swain said fuck it, I’m going for it. Best song they ever did IMO. It's got to be loud though. I was living in Spokane when they filmed that movie. Just a couple of blocks up the street from where he was running across the Monroe Street bridge at the beginning. I was an unpayed extra.  . My wife and I both thought Lunatic Fringe was the second hit from Golding Earring, the first being Radar Love. LOL. Just a few weeks ago it came on the radio and we found out it was Red Ryder. These go to eleven. | |||

There's a whole group of 70's bands that produced one or a few hits that all kind of have a vagueness that runs them together a bit, at least for someone listening 10+ years later. TThey are not always mistakeable for each other but I kind of define them as post-Zeppelin, post-Pink Floyd, post-Beatles, post-Who bands. Maybe they were the first bands to be influenced a lot by those rock bands. A few of the big ones like Styx, Journey, Boston, Heart, etc. And then the lesser known ones I think of are Golden Earring, BTO, The Cult, Red Rider, Billy Idol, Thin Lizzy, Blue Oyster Cult, Billy Squier, etc. There ain't much difference in the man I want to be and the man that I really am. | |||
