Maybe it's just me projecting my own beliefs on the show, but I think for several seasons the show has been depicting, and Phillip has been seeing, time and again the failures of the Soviet Union v. the successes of the U.S. There doesn't seem to me to be much/any effort to show any downside to living in the U.S., whereas life in the Soviet Union is clearly illustrated as bleak and dangerous. I actually take heart that it appears there's something on TV that illustrates the contrast between free-markets and free people v. socialism/communism.

Concerning the Kansas capers, I really hope this is where that's going --
That would follow your hopes for this show, rusbro, it would necessarily lead to some serious reevaluation, particularly Phillip. My hopes too but I can't ignore the agitprop the show serves up. Despite their awful deeds, the two agents have no problem justifying themselves with their cartoonish boilerplate ideology. It's almost as if the backwardness and deprivation of the USSR merely emphasizes the righteousness of their mission. Whether the two are fully on board, they almost seem secondary to serving up leftist platitudes for the viewers. Lots of examples, how about Paige babysitting for the reverend? It's been previously established that his church is active in various causes like disarmament and civil rights. It's no surprise then when he offers Paige some reading material, Karl Marx. She says something to the effect "Isn't he against religion?" His response? "Yes, but he's great on class and poverty." I'll hope against hope that AUTiger89 is right about our country's motives, destroying these commies' reason to be. And then there's the matter of Phil's kid working his way to dad, another game changer I hope. Set the controls for the heart of the Sun.

4/4 episode had some really effective scenes. IMO the writers are handling the storylines quite well. They've managed to develop and milk the arcs of Philip and Elizabeth at a pace that seems slow to me, but still satisfying. Good call by AUTiger89 regarding the pests and crops; American free enterprise, and American desire to help others, on the verge supposedly of accomplishing something the good ol' USSR couldn't/wouldn't begin to do. Hit both 'Lizbeth and Phil like a ton of bricks.

Yes, way to go. The unknown son remains a real wild card in this season now. Not sure how he can be sent back without dire results. If he stays to seek out dad, someone will have to put a stop to that. Phil's flashbacks seem to set the stage for a bigger crisis of conscience than he's already faced with. Set the controls for the heart of the Sun.

Paige and mom's ongoing discussion of Marx reminds me of this recent thread -- https://sigforum.com/eve/forums...0601935/m/9680046224 Set the controls for the heart of the Sun.

I wish every person in Western Nations would watch this show. I was stationed in Berlin when the Wall went up and I guarantee the S U knew how to play dirty. Scouts Out

Dayum, 'Lizbeth. I thought the look on her face meant she was moved by the story and hoping Phillip was too. Oh what a fool am I!

Pretty much starting to hate this waste of time. A gratuitous, stand-alone entry tonight with the easiest cop out -- nazis. I knew exactly where this was going, it went right there. **insert Bronx cheer here** Set the controls for the heart of the Sun.

I love this show. Can't wait till next weeks episode comes around. I think it's the best show on public television today.

I agree, from the get go it's been consistently one of the best written shows out there. Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

It's on cable not public TV cable but I agree too!

I thought this was the last season, but the 6th will be the final season. I see the seams beginning to crack between Philip and Elizabeth. This season has seemed slow to me. Phone's ringing, Dude.

Slow, but it's a slow burn. I predict it's going to finish the season with a bang. Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

Typical cliffhanger ending. I bet season six will be a rollercoaster.
