Currently happily on win10 but I have been running into a issue recently with the xbox/gaming app that I can not fix, and sadly the only option I seem to have left is basically a reinstall of windows. I REALLY don't want to do that as I have a lot of stuff installed that generally takes me about two weeks worth of screwing around to get everything reinstalled, set up and working again, Steam and Vortex and all my games and mods with everything installed and set up on seperate drives and locations and such, being one of those. So I am currently now tossing around the thought of moving to win11, being that if I do need to go through the hassle of reinstalling/upgrading, it would pretty much need to be with 11. The "problem" tho is I have never actually done a in place upgrade before. I have only ever done fresh installs, and I have no idea what to expect if I do it. Has anyone done the upgrade and how did thing go? Will I loose anything, break anything?? How much of a headach would I be looking forward to? I do have a custom Rufus install ready to go also. This message has been edited. Last edited by: PakRatJR,

Sidegrading/downgrading to Win 11 is not a good idea, unless absolutely forced. There are plenty of ways to reinstall Win10. And at the end of that process, you won't have to re-learn a UI that needed no 'fixing' Recent (current) thread on one of the myriad aspects of said sidegrade/downgrade: "Windows 11s User Interface Kinda Sucks"

Thanks, lol I actually found your post shortly after I posted Yeah the UI is just one of several things I really don't like about 11. Everything at work is 11 and it definately is a frustrating experience most days. I would really prefer to stay on 10 but I still have the same concerns with trying a in place reinstall, and now with it being no longer supported, I'm also wondering if I would even be able to get all of the updates to the current/latest version.

I got a free update from Win7 to Win10 on my last PC. It was a digital download and went in on top of my Win7 installation with no issues. You could try using the repair feature on a Win 10 installation disc, if you have one. Maybe that'll fix your issue without having to reinstall the OS completely? I just completed an 'In-Place Upgrade' on four PCs this week; two identical Laptops, one Desktop Workstation (now running Windows 11 for Workstations), and a dedicated Gaming PC, and it works perfectly! You will neither lose anything, nor break anything, so NO need to worry about anything! I didn't want to move to 25H2 so i created an ISO for Build 26100.6584 using UUPdump and upgraded to 24H2. Once I had the ISO, I created the install media on a USB Flash Drive using Rufus, and then performed the 'In-Place Upgrade' with that. Just Right Click --> Open the USB Drive in File Explorer, and then Right Click on the setup.exe --> Run As Administrator. During the initial 'In-Place Upgrade' dialogue accept the default to 'check for updates', and you'll end up with Build 26100.7171. Works like a charm... ETA - One of the PCs I upgraded was my son's Gaming Rig, which has lots of RGB Lighting, and desktop customization. I checked the SW versions on all of the associated software to verify W11 compatibility and ensure NO issues. One application required an update which we did in advance of the upgrade. Upon the final reboot & Login after the upgrade was complete, there were a couple of hiccups that needed to be resolved, but no real issues. Wallpaper Engine, which is a Steam App that runs at Startup needed to be updated (I didn't see that one coming) and it wasn't especially intuitive getting that done. There was a dialog box indicating an update was required, but clicking OK didn't perform the update and I needed to root around in Steam to get it to update manually. One I fixed that, it booted without incident, just as it always had prior to the update. My son reports NO Issues whatsoever post ‘Upgrade’. ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! Orguss thanks. I'm looking into the Win10 repair install but I am slightly wirried that it won't update or I would run into issues due to the EOL thing. Still digging tho and still hoping I can get things figured out without having to try any sort of reinstall. nhracecraft thanks. Definately good to hear everything went well. It does make me a bit less worried

So a update on this.... Took the plunge and upgraded to 11. So far at least, everything seems to be working as it should, EXCEPT for the one and only reason I upgraded, which was to fix the xbox/gaming services issue. Yeah that still refuses to work So I am basically right back to square one and the only option left apparently is a complete nuke and start with a fresh, clean install. I am not doing that as it most definitely not worth that headache On the "bonus" side tho I guess. Using a program called Explorer patcher I was thankfully able to revert the god awful UI back to the much nicer win10 look and feel, so that's nice at least

^^ Any chance there's an 'update' in the Microsoft Store for that Xbox/gaming app you're needing to fix? ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! Thanks. Unfortunately no on updates. The majority of the fixes are basically uninstalling everything "gaming" related and re downloading and installing again, so everytning is already the latest versions. There is even a official repair tool for it from microsoft and even that just fails every time no matter what.

It’s too late to try to diagnose the issue, but it would interest me to know what the issue is, specifically, with the app. "I'm yet another resource-consuming kid in an overpopulated planet raised to an alarming extent by Hollywood and Madison Avenue, poised with my cynical and alienated peers to take over the world when you're old and weak!" - Calvin, "Calvin & Hobbes"

Yeah I would really like to know also lol. I do find it odd that the upgrade didn't fix it witch kinda feels like it's a windows issue and not a app issue. I would guess tho from the amount of digging I've been doing and the fixes being the same for both 10 and 11, whatever the issue was in 10 would be the same diagnoses in 11.

Which 'Xbox' app? And what do you do with it, or in this case NOT do with it? ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! It lets you play microsoft/xbox games on PC. In my case, I got a free Fallout 76 key that was for the microsoft store version. I already have the game on Steam but thought it would be nice to have another account and character to use once and a while. I currently have the new one set up on my old latop that is a tad under spec for the game and it's only vaugly playable. I had planned on it being on my main PC but because the app won't work I can't download and install it.
