It could be anything. Maybe your Grandpa’s single shot .22 that he learned on, or that one rifle you got an amazing deal on and you’re trying to keep it factory new and never even touch it, or the M1 carbine you love to shoot but .223 is cheaper to go through so you take the AR instead.

My example is the last one. It’s an early ‘44 Inland in very nice shape. Shoots great. Easily one of my very favorite guns and I kinda feel bad about how rarely it comes out of the safe. This last decade made it easier to want to sit on ammo instead of shoot any of it up since I was never working with stockpile numbers in the first place. But I enjoy shooting this thing more than most other guns I own or have shot. So today, I resolved to pull it out of the safe and I’m going to strip it down, clean it and grease it and see if my neighbor wants to go make loud noises with me sometime next week.

What’s in your safe that should get more attention than it does?

My home built AR in 6.8, by far.

Other than zeroing it and trying it out once or twice after I finished it, it's been sitting in the back of one of my safes for a couple years now.

Not like I don't have ammo for it, either. I have a case of Hornady 110gr V-max and some odd and ends of FMJs for it.

I had to look it up. I bet thing is a hoot at the range. That’s the kinda thing I’m taking about: the gun that always makes you grin like a fool when you shoot it and ask yourself “why don’t I do this more often?” Smile

I have a first year(1932) Winchester 61. It was my fathers and I learned to shoot with it. I haven't taken it out in many years.

LWRC piston gun in 5.56.

Great rifle, very accurate, but heavy with the 1913 rail and H Bbl.

I've found I prefer DI guns, so the LWRC is just laying around looking good.

An unfired Sako TRG 42 in 338LM. I bought it as a pair to my TRG22 (308) but can't really justify launching those expensive rounds at a piece of paper 200yds away. It's been sitting in the safe for at least 5 years untouched.

Blaser Tac 2 in 308. I bought mags in Lapua and have a standing order with sig for the barrel and bolt, been unfulfilled for years now. This is due to the German constraints on export. I wanted the full 338 setup to move forward.

It’s a tie between my Remington Model 7 stainless .308, and Sig SHR970 in the same caliber. The 7 is a dream to carry and fairly accurate. The Sig is devilishly accurate and relegated my old Remington 700 all weather Varmint to second string until i finally traded it off in a fit of indifference.

Since I started hunting at less than 50 yards in thickish woodland cover, my .44 mags (6) get all the work. My biggest concern is which one of those gets to take a deer each year (2 sets me up so somebody gonna lose out Big Grin)

For years I have tried to persuade the potential 338LM buyers that this caliber isn't their best choice. Issues discussed include high initial cost of rifle & scope, high cost of ammo, substantial recoil makes accuracy a challenge, and lack of a suitable shooting range.

At least your rifle is "safe".

I "want" an M82A1. Because. I've never actually put any real thought into it for the reasons above and beyond. I could liquidate enough stuff to make it happen, but it's never going to be worth it to me, again, for the reasons you list. The juice wouldn't be worth the squeeze.

I went this route as well. I can't remember if the .308 chassis can be upgraded to the "magnum" calibers, though. Mine is in .300 Win Mag and is chock full of awesome. It's only been shot 17 times, and could really use some range time.

I had a gunsmith that had way too many pets so agreed to swap services with him. I did the pets, he did the gunsmithing. I had an old Mauser that shot pretty well, and he reworked it for me. Now it's a .25-06, and supposedly shoots lights out. Heavy barrel, engraved bolt, yada yada.

I haven't shot it once, and I probably have close to 4K in trade out money tied up in it, lol.

Oh wow. Yeah, that's one that deserves to make it to the range at least once.

My AR style rifles. I find I am much more likely to grab my 15/22 or another 22 than my centerfires. I have plenty of ammo for them, but the hassle of policing brass saving it to reload etc drives me back to the 22.

I shot this one in October for the first time since 1978-1979.

Though I have two shotguns that have been in my home even longer, that I've never fired.

I had a M82A1 for a few years,

great rifles,

but no good to me when I only have access to a 100yd range and rarely 300 yrds,,,

got rid of it long ago
