Considering a 9mm Revolver... Login/Join

All,

I have a P365 with the XL grip which is milled and sporting a Holosun 507K on it. It is a great daily carry piece and is my only carry piece at this time.

However, I have 3 dogs that need walked in the evenings (many times very late at night) and many times my dress consists of jersey shorts and a t-shirt. The shorts have a drawstring, which I always tie, but there is not enough support for my P365 riding in my Tier 1 Concealment holster.

So, I am looking for a small revolver that I can throw in the shorts and go. There are enough stray dogs and wannabe thugs around that I want to be armed.

We have had a lot of opportunistic car break-ins nearly on a nightly basis (thank you Democrats), so the thug comment was not speculation, they are here.

I would like a 9mm snub nose revolver. However, I do not know if 9mm revolvers "just work" or if there are major drawbacks over a 38 or 357.

I have several thousand rounds of 9mm defensive ammo of all types, so I do not want to start collecting a new caliber of ammo, unless there is good reason too.

I want a shrouded hammer, snub nose, from a reputable company. I was looking at a Ruger LCR in 9mm.

Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions to help me satisfy my need?

I am not a revolver guy. The only revolver I own is my grandfathers service revolver from his time as a police officer. It is in 38 Special and has a 5 or 6 inch barrel. I have never fired it. I know nothing about revolvers.

The only problem with 9mm revolvers is finding one at a decent price. My 9mm LCR was great, and I regret selling it. The .38 models are much easier to find and cheaper. But as far as athletic shorts carry, I’ve had the LCR, J Frame and Colt models. The 642 is the way to go for pocket carry in athletic shorts. The LCR is just awkwardly shaped for pocket carry. But I must admit my Ruger LCP Max is my favorite for pocket carry out of all the small revolvers I’ve owned. Lighter, smaller and twice the capacity. Hope that helps.

Would a different type of carry work with the P365 you already own & like? Soon we’ll be in cooler weather also.

Hey BOZ… Going to send you an email. I have the 9mm LCR but what I have to say does not belong in this page.

Another option might be a non-milled slide for pocket carry.

Thanks drummer... you gave me a couple of things to check out.

Sour... with the red dot, XL grip, and fully loaded magazine, I cannot make it work. Too large to put in my pockets. Also I cannot find a pocket holster that will accommodate the red dot (it is still too large for pocket carry). I am a 5'8" inch guy. My pockets are small.

I think a revolver is where I need to be with a double action trigger that would be safer for pocket carry.

I know fall is coming, but I have spent 0 (zero) money on myself in a couple of years and I think I am due for a new toy. Money is not really a concern. Form, function, weight, and reliability is what I am after. And, in 8-9 months, it will be hot again.

Are you set on 9mm? Because there just aren't a lot of options other than the LCR even if you have the $$ to spend on something priced pretty high (like a S&W 940) because there just weren't that many made. But go to .38/.357 and there are a lot of Ruger and S&W options.

Sounds like you’re making a huge change when minor changes to your current setup might get just as favorable results.

IF you are set on a revolver I see no reason to go 9mm over 357. If you’re looking for pocket carry you’re gonna be at the same 5 rounds.

S&W 640 Pro was a favorite of mine in hot Florida weather.

If you’re not a revolver guy, have you looked at the LC9, I recommend that admittedly ignorant as to whether the LC9 is considerably larger than the LCP. My LCP was a fantastic pocket gun so somewhere in between might work as well.

I hear you. Down here in Florida sometimes the little J frames just carry better. Yes you give up capacity but in the vast majority of civilian SD cases that isn’t really a liability. They carry well. They are small and light. They pocket carry well. What’s not to like? If you do go revolver you should check out the Zeta6 brand speed strips. They are way better than the standard fare. A guy here karma’d me some and they are fantastic. I owe him a review still.

Finding a used S&W 940 at a decent price is near impossible which pretty much leaves you with current production Rugers. I have no experience with the LCRs but do have an SP101 in 9mm. Ruger has a DAO SP101 with a bobbed hammer, but I have never seen one in 9mm. So the SP101 in 9mm will have a hammer and is pretty heavy for pocket carry. That said, all that extra weight makes the gun a pleasure to shoot in 9mm.

My pocket carry gun is a S&W 642 Pro if I need to grab something quick. It is usually loaded Speer Golddot 38 +p in a moon clip and backed up by one or two Safariland speed loaders. If a lightweight Centennial in 9mm were to be introduced without a lock from S&W I’d be one of the first in line.

Okay... Okay...

I will consider a 357/38 option. Hell, what is one more caliber when I already have a bunch of different calibers.

For 357/38 models, what do you guys like. Again, light (relatively), shrouded hammer, nice clean but long trigger pull, reliable (track record), and from a reputable American company.

Despite my best efforts, including making my own holster, the 365 just does not fit the role of dog walking late at night, taking out the trash, etc. It will not work because of the clothes I like to wear in the house after a long day of work. Except for the winter, I do not get "dressed" to accommodate my gun every time a dog needs to pee.

After some quick internet searching I see that Ruger is still in the running, as well as S&W, Charter Arms and others.

Thanks so far guys...

It would be hard to beat an S&W 442. Light and easy to pocket carry. I carried one for many years. I replaced it with a Kahn PM 9 for added ammo capacity. I still drop the 442 in a pocket on occasion.

For your purposes, why not a 7 round S&W 351PD in 22 magnum? At just under 12 ounces, great choice for walking the dogs with..

I have a few 9mm revolvers. But they are not much if any lighter than a 365 or better yet G43.
I use a Remora which supports my 365 in a bathing suit if I cinch it up — to the extent I’m comfortable driving to the grocery store.
(I had a S&W 442 drilled out to take 9mm moonclips. Shot only a couple cylinders as the same shop unfortunately buggered the trigger pull. Recoil noticeable, but not terrible, and that set up will make for a nice to carry 9mm revolver when the trigger is sorted out.)

I have the 351c enclosed hammer version. 11.5 ounces. 7 shots of 22 mag. Big Dot front sight.

Carry it in a pocket and you won't know it's there.

I think it's a good fit for the scenario.

Easy to shoot accurately enough with one hand. (Will probably be trying to hold onto the dogs with the other hand).

The new short-barrel 22mag defensive loads are nothing to sneeze at.

I wouldn't carry it as primary in a higher threat environment but to walk to the mailbox or take the dogs around the block, it works.

All...

Going to stop by the LGS on Friday to see what they have in stock and if the 351 or 442 are in the rental case.

In the mean time, I will continue my search online and watching what y'all respond with.

Thanks!

640 Pro is my recommendation but also not likely available at most retail locations. Keep in mind it won’t be pleasant to shoot with 357 but that won’t matter in a self defense scenario. Practice with 38 and load 357 for carry.

Others who are much more well versed in S&W J-Frame pistols may have more readily available recommendations.

I second this recommendation, much cheaper to feed ammo and much nicer to shoot compared to a light weight 9MM or 38. Carry mine a lot....

I have this Smith Bodyguard 38 and I really like it. I have not seen many people talk about it but it deserves more recognition IMO. It’s lightweight, but I’d surprisingly easy to shoot even with +p ammo. I think it would make an excellent choice for what you need. I’ve seen them locally for under $400 recently. It’s even slightly lighter than the highly recommended 442 but IME a better shooter.

Here is mine next to my standard P365 for size reference

I like both the 642 Pro and the 442 Pro as they are cut for moon clips but don’t require them. They also do not have the hideous Hillary hole lock. Same gun just different finishes with the 642 being stainless and the 442 being matte black. The 640 Pro is all steel but has excellent factory sights and is 357 mag. I personally chose to go lightweight over the 640 Pro and 357 mag. The 22 mag would be an interesting choice depending on what the most likely threat would be. I wouldn’t want it for two legged threats, but it’s better than the gun left home.
