I was perusing S&W's website and found this S&W 940 I know there are a few fans of the 9mm revolvers.

Cool. No lock too. Not going to pay $999 for one though.

I wish they would’ve made a variant of this in 327 federal with six rounds….

Yeah, that's cool. But they should have built it on a regular 640 frame and sold it for $600 instead of $1000 Frown.

What do you mean? It's still a J-Frame. Just the cylinder and barrel are 9mm instead of 38/357.

I'm guessing the price is because some people have been asking for this model to be brought back for 20 or 30 years and it's a limited exclusive run that they can ask a higher price for.

I think what he is referring to is that is basically a 640 Pro. I have one. It’s great but it is an upgraded from standard gun that has a bunch of features that drive the cost up from 600 to the 1000 dollar range. For the most part completely unnecessary. Fluted barrel, fancy grips, Novak night sights.

At 600 bucks these might have flown off the shelves. At 1000 it is not going to be something I would consider.

I don’t mean to speak for 92 but the 640 Pro chassis is an odd starting point.

Okay, that makes sense. This is a distributer exclusive. So it's going to go for the upcharge. If it were just a reintroduced S&W model it would probably have a more normal price and not have the upgraded pro features.

You nailed exactly the point I was trying to make. This is a nice gun, and like you I love my 640 Pro. But while I want a 9mm J-Frame for the novelty, it's also kinda a gimmick, and not one that I want to drop a grand on.

Revolvers are best with rimmed cartridges, and while a 9mm version would be a fun range toy, I don't see wanting to deal with moon clips and the associated potential headspace issues on a serious-use defensive gun. I'd shoot it, but probably wouldn't carry it. As such, I'd have a much easier time spending $600-ish on a "base model" built around a regular 640 or 642 (or even better, a 3" 60 with adjustable sights!) than $1000 on a fancied up Pro variant.

I like it, but as mentioned, $1K is too much. If I was a regular J frame carrier as a CCW, it might be worth it. But I regulate J's to back-up guns in the air weight models. I've got the 9mm LCR, and I think I paid under $500 for it used. Maybe I'll luck into one used some day at a good price.

I tracked one on GB and it went for $855, plus shipping, etc.

I'm pretty sure I read an article sometime in the 90's about a Model 940 where the cylinder was modified and you could shoot 9mm, 9x21mm, 9x23mm, .356TSW and .38Super in it. Does anyone else recall which magazine it might have been in?

I don't understand what S&W's aversion is to the 327 cartridge. People pay big bucks converting K frames to 327. A J frame so chambered would make sense too, look at how popular the recent 32H&R's have been. The new Mountain Gun is another one that would likely sell well in 327. For a revolver company you think they would be all over the 327.

I had a 9mm Ruger Sp101 that scratched my itch for a 9mm revolver. I wanted but couldn’t afford a 9mm S&W 940 back in my early twenties when they were still around. I don’t think I’m in at $1K, but if I hadn’t scratched that itch I probably would have been. I don’t have a 640 Pro but always wanted one, so maybe this would satisfy that desire.

I think the main aversion is I doubt the cartridge survives as more than a novelty. I would say the same regarding the Federal 30 Super Carry. I think these will burn out much faster than the 40 S&W, 45 Gap, and, 357 Sig.

It seems a few people on several sites I'm on want a .327 mag K frame. But once it's made, those few people might buy one. Or complain it's too much (like this 940) and it will promptly be discontinued. I've seen so many S&W's go over the years it's ridiculous. In fact, I don't think the 640 Pro is even in S&W's current line-up. With Smith, get it while you can. Why I just picked-up a .44 mag Mountain Gun. Who knows what the future of those will be.

Looks like I have to eat my words. I just had my FFL order me one. Came out to around $975 OTD. Expensive, but if these are a Davidson exclusive, these will probably be out of production by next year. And I always said if they became available again, I'd get one.

The Smith 547 had a similar system to the Charter. I'm sure the fit and finish on those was vastly superior to anything Charter arms has ever produced, but you're also gonna pay dearly for it at this point. I actually know a guy who has one...awesome little gun, but that's a lot of complexity to build into a design just to shoot 9mm instead of .38/.357.

S&W already tried this years ago with the 32 H&R Magnum. Model 332 iirc. No sales. No real benefit. Expensive ammo. Limited availability.

I sold mine. Well, I sold my wife’s.

Sure the 327 is better ballistics but I don’t think they have any interest in repeating the 332.
