In the not-too-distant future, I'll try an inexpensive RDS on my Ruger .22, to see what this is all about. It need not be expensive because, being mounted to the receiver instead of a recoiling slide, it's not subject to those forces.

I remember watching one of the Active Self Protection videos where John Correia didn't have a set of backup iron sights on his P30. He said he might not even put them on because he could just center the target in the window of his optic like somehow, someway, it was just as good as having a real set of backup iron sights. So let me preface by saying I believe you should have a set of backup irons. No arguments here. That said, I’ve thought about this and if MY dot went down during a serious social event I don’t think I (personally) would have the presence of mind/time to move to irons. Chances are I am using that glass like a big ass Ghost Ring/indexing off the slide. I’ve shot just “through the glass” and out to 8 yards or so it’s passable. Again this is not some you don’t need back up irons argument just a more introspective look at my capabilities/ability to transition if need be. Take Care, Shoot Safe, Chris

I would like to think that I trained enough that it wouldn't be an issue. The way I look at it, not every encounter is super close or a big torso to shoot at. If using a dot is what someone likes, then by all means go for it. I just think they should practice transitioning, even if it's not a large part of their daily/weekly/monthly training routine and truly know how to use the backup sights. Some folks slap dots on their pistols and never train with the iron sights thinking just having them is good enough in an emergency. Agreed and one should always be proficient with the irons. My only point was that for myself personally, while I am incredibly comfortable with irons I doubt I would have the time or mental capacity to transition in an oh shit moment. Now if distance or cover is at play then absolutely but in a clear kydex dot no worky worky moment I doubt I, personally would be able to seemlessly transition to irons. I mean between my lack of skill, no innate talent and the fact I will probably screaming like a little girl (it's my battle cry, don't judge me Again, I am only speaking for me and my personal skillset. I am sure most folks are vastly more equipped for handling this then I. Like I said I try to be honest with myself......well at least with this.....ok, pretty much just this.....anyhoo Once again, none of this is a disagreement. I think folks should have back up irons. I think folks should train with them as well as occluded dots, for dot failure etc. I just am being honest with myself and only myself that chances are I am going with fundamentals and a big ass ghost ring. He's got a pretty long and distinguished professional resume. He should know better.

Just to be clear, that comment of mine that you quoted wasn't directed at you at all my friend. Sorry if it came across that way. I believe you're selling yourself short, Chris. I get the feeling you would do just fine regardless.
