Some of you may remember, we had one of the F-150's, with the wonderful 5.4 Triton engine. We replaced the plugs twice, in excess of $1,400 total. There was a class action lawsuit and today we received our settlement check for $236.60. It is better than a stick in the eye. Anyone else receive their check yet? Niech Zyje P-220 Steve | ||

I have the 5.4 with the spark plug issue (2008 expedition). I replaced the plugs once, earlier this year at 90k miles at the dealer.....I think total cost was $500. I remember getting a class action notice a few times a few years ago but have not received a check for anything, but hadn't needed to change the plugs until earlier this year. | |||

That much? I expected more like $25, $50 at most after the lawyers got their cut. This engine is complete garbage, AFAIC. First the spark plugs blow out of the head because there are only three threads, then the separating plugs like yours, as well as the timing chain guides and cam phasers (later engines). And the exhaust manifold studs that break off in the head. (This is something common to many engines, not just Ford, with 8mm studs.) 1996 was the last good Ford truck engine. | |||

I got rid of mine before it needed a plug change. The small local shop I dealt with clued me in on the problems so I bailed as soon as I could. | |||

I haven't had any of those problems, but only have 97k miles. They got all of my plugs out without breaking any. BUT, I'm getting a new expedition this year with the new model....just in case, before I get many more miles on it  Of course the build date on mine was only a month before they switched to the new heads that don't blow the plugs out or have them snap off....LOL. | |||

Man, I must be pretty lucky. I'm right at 290,000 miles on mine (97 F150) and going strong. The motor doesn't leak a drop of oil. I've had the plugs changed a few times and don't recall any issues. The truck's been great with very few repairs. I didn't get a check, but I also didn't know there was a lawsuit. | |||

If I remember right the problems are only with the 3 valve heads in model years 2003-2008 or something like that...I know a November or Dec 2007 build date was the last of the issue and then they corrected the problem after. | |||

I removed mine after 100k miles they come right out if you use an impact wrench that's the trick. sounds crazy but it works, never replaced the coil packs and have 250k miles on it now. I think some of these high priced remove and replace are more or less just ripping people off because they know they can. even if you have to use the lisle tool to remove them all it would only take 4 to 5 hours max. glad you got your money, I never filed. | |||

The sparkplugs are just the tip of the iceberg with that engine. They KNEW there was a problem with the design and took no action to correct it. $230? Oh yeah, that makes the consumer with a real tort whole. The cam phasers and timing system is shit in that engine. There is an oil starvation problem to the center main journal on the crankshaft. Maybe some trucks managed to get a good engine. But enough are out there that have self destructed under routine maintenance to conclude there is a problem. Me either. We own a 2001 Expedition (103k miles) and a 2003 F-150 (140k miles, engine rebuilt at 106k). The Expy has been okay with all of the spark plugs and coils replaced at least once and some twice. The F-150 rebuild was needed after a blown head gasket and other issues - I was too cheap to buy a new or used pickup when it happened which was a huge mi$take. So while the motor is doing okay, the rest of the truck is having the usual Ford electrical issues (mirrors, sunroof, turn signals) and paint issues. The 1991 F-150 I bought new is in better shape than the 2003 I bought new. Mrs. 'Hook wants another Expedition "when it's time to replace this one, which is not now." Me? I'm buying a buddies 2013 Ram Laramie 5.7 when his new 2018 gets here. After 26 years of being a Ford truck owner thought I'd try a different type of painful experience than what Ford has consistently provided. I have 165k miles on my 2004 F150 with no major work done to it, with the original spark plugs. Still running good so why mess with it. I noticed my expedition started running just a touch rougher than normal at light throttle.....it ran the same but you could hear the engine running differently.....changing the plugs at 91k miles made a big difference in how it runs. | |||

Oh, good news! I wasn't too worried....I've pretty much got my money out of the truck.  I am hoping for 300,000 plus miles though, just for the fun of it. | |||
