McAfee's been our go-to for years, but they're becoming too expensive, and at times somewhat annoying.

Any suggestions for alternatives? We're talking basic stuff, internet including TV, and cellphones.

If it matters, we're using T-Mobile for everything.

Try Lambskin. Thinner and better lube. I don't think they offer a ribbed version, though.

Nothing for iOS. No infections over a decade of use.

Malwarebytes for macOS. The free version. No infections over a decade of use. And a daily Time Machine backup.

I don't. Basic Windows security on my Windows machine, nothing on my Apple computers and nothing on my phone. I feel like traditional viruses are gone and now it is exploitation from bogus links. Don't click them and you'll be okay.

Whatever IOS and Windows use now seems to be fine.
Beyond that, be careful not to click on any links in emails and go directly to any site.
In the old days those antivirus programs seemed to cause more trouble than they were worth and they charged you for the pleasure of being constantly spammed.

Is opening emails always okay? Do they know you opened an email? What about mail previews like in outlook or Apple Mail app? Are links inside emails the only thing to avoid?

For the most part, it is only shady links you need to worry about. Senders can request a read receipt on emails but to the best of my knowledge, that isn't really something you can exploit. There is something called a zero-click attack where someone can gain access to your device with no wrongdoing on your part but the development of those is intense and generally is something used to target specific individuals or groups. It is the sort of thing a government or other group with serious resources would use to go after opposition. Links in emails, texts, etc. A coworker recently got scammed by a bogus message via Facebook Messenger that allowed someone access to her bank account and it has been a mess to fix.

IOS is quite robust and updated regularly.

Scammers work hard to force the victim to make an error. Clicking on a link in an email is only one type. Clicking on a top result from an internet search is also a potential error. Most especially (but not exclusively) if it says AD in the result. Scammers pay for ads that look like legitimate sites, including government agencies like Social Security and all kinds of financial institutions. Scammers also buy ads on social media like Facebook or create fake accounts to push scam sites.

Reusing passwords is another error.

Have been using Bitdefender for years. This is both personal and for my business laptops and desktops. Never had any issues and they keep it updated for latest and greatest threats as they are discovered.

Have used webroot but maybe switching to just use Microsoft defender. Anyone else make that change?
