15 years ago, I used to enjoy Portland. Nice, clean with great restaurants and boutique shops (there was a men's clothing store I liked, name forgotten). Some of the best Italian influenced food I've had - not fancy just great tasting.

Now, I wouldn't even consider going. Tillamook is as close as I'll get to it now.

Since my son now lives in Salem OR (goodbye NOLA) I have to fly into Portland in order to get to him. I found Portland to be a beautiful city with Mt. Hood as its background. And its ruined. Drugs, homelessness, crime and filth everywhere. The hotel where I stayed during one trip could not tell me what restaurants it would be safe to walk to. And my CPL? Not accepted in OR. But drugs and crime are!

Portland elected officials have been and are left-extremists that have money-wasting policies that have at the same time increased crime. Crime statistics are worthless as citizens stoped reporting crimes. A great city in the 80s now a moral dump filled with junkies.

My job transferred me to the Portland area in 1991. I live ~20 mi. west of Portland. The city was a great place then. Unfortunately, the Lib politicians ruined the city. They created a real crime-ridden shithole. I haven't been to Portland proper in 7 years.

It will take 5 years to clean up the corrupt government. It will take another 5 years to curb the crime and clean up the filth. That's being optimistic.

I used to work with a guy that ended up moving to Portland . It's the perfect place for him and his family . He's a space cadet and his leftist wife walks around town picking up stuff off the street to repurpose . She sells tie-dyed shirts on the side .The kids dropped out of school and are supposedly " Home schooled " . I think they belong to some kind of like thinking education / Indoctrination group .

The media, and local pols, have made a bigger deal of this than it deserves. "Expanding the military's mission," etc. The troops - we don't know yet if they will be NG or AD - will reportedly only guard ICE (and maybe other) federal installations. That is not "law enforcement" and its not "martial law." But it should have the effect of detering sniper attacks and drive-bys on ICE.

What has been going on at the ICE facility in Portland is absolutely ridiculous!

I just Googled it and found a lot of reports from Portland about doxing, demonstrating violently (with assaults on federal officers) during ICE personnel and vehicle movements at night, plus threats, vandalism, etc., over the last couple of months.

I'm willing to bet there is a relatively small group of dedicated Antifa, probably with outside funding of some type (since they can't be working if they are up all night harassing ICE). A sort of professional agitator group, being paid by someone. It would be good to find out who is paying for this and roll them up, too.

Going after that small group - one report says its the same "several dozen" over and over again - would be a good idea. Before someone gets the idea to commit murder like these other whack jobs. Someone should shut down their networking on the CNN anti-ICE app (or whatever means they use). Not the military's job, but they can help by extending security and documenting (videotaping) everything. That's why anti-masking laws are important. Catch people being violent; prosecution by the U.S. Attorney; three-to-five in the Federal Pen in Sheridan, Oregon, so they can be close to Mom and Dad.

Several factors.

In the federal system, the largest thing is juries. Federal juries are still made up of the “defendants” peers. In liberal areas, it is nearly impossible to get convictions depending on the jury make up.

Conversely, in conservative areas it can also be tricky. Sometimes, in conservative areas, you can get one or two people on the jury that hate the government and will vote to acquit out of spite. You also get pro 2A jurors that refuse to convict on gun crimes because of their beliefs.

Then there are incompetent/lazy AUSAs. Incompetent/lazy agents that take good cases and put them together poorly.

Then there are federal sentencing guidelines. For serious/violent crimes, the guidelines can be really good. For rioters, it’s not so good. If the whole J6 nonsense had been tried anywhere but DC, they would have gotten few plea deals, and fewer convictions. They intentionally tried everyone in DC knowing that the juries would be loaded in their favor, and they could get away with things that were down right illegal. If it had of been tried in even the Southern District of Illinois, the outcome would have been much, much different.

Good thing I’m seeing right now in the fed system is that this administration has put the right US Attorneys in place. They have given specific marching orders to the AUSAs on violent crime. If an AUSA is not following the game plan, they are self selecting to go elsewhere or being fired.

Just to clarify, the US Constitution guarantees the right to a jury trial which includes federal and state courts. Most if not all state constitutions also guarantee the right to a speedy jury trial.
