Maybe they should be calling a social worker instead. Wasn't that the proposal - send some "touchy-feely" person instead of the police to deescalate a situation.

I bet there are plenty of them still around. Wonder what the response time of a social worker is these days?

I live in the `burbs, but used to work downtown (before Covid) and we could see it starting as far back as 2010. Now we see it every damn day on the news.

The thing is, it wasn't the business owners that elected the current crop of progressive assholes in charge, it was the spoiled, entitled, only thinking of themselves idiots who did that. The ones who will vote for whoever promises them the most free shit. But it's the business owners who are paying the price for it, both monetarily and otherwise. More of them are shutting their doors every week, either moving out to the burbs or across the river to Vancouver where the taxes and the crime are both lower, or just bagging it all together and quitting. And it's not just coffee shops, it's bigger businesses too. Like Columbia Sportswear.

<rant><thread_drift>
The likely winner of the gubernatorial election next week will make Kate Brown look like a moderate. She'll team up with Jay Inslee and float a whole platform of progressive shit across both states. You ain't seen nuthin' yet. As for measure 114, I don't know. It could go either way. If it passes I'll become a felon overnight.

The CEO at my last employer has jumped onto every liberal bandwagon that came along. Three months into the George Floyd "incident", he created a whole new department in the company to promote diversity. They tell me that I'm a racist just because I'm white. Fuck that shit. I don't give a damn what color a person's skin is. How do you react when somebody accuses you of something you damn well never did? You get angry, that's what. You resent the people who made the accusation. So what this new diversity department is doing, is starting to turn me into the very thing that they claim to hate so much. So I decided a few months ago to retire early, and three weeks ago I did just that. I told them why too, at my exit interview. Next week I'm leaving this progressive utopia for redder pastures in Idaho. My last official act as an Oregonian was to vote against all that shit. Sort of a parting middle finger.

There, I feel a little better now, thanks for listening.

Yeah at $100K a year, you'll need a couple of roommates, or live in Fresno and commute to SF...

I would say yes and no to your last part there You're right in the sense that I would ask my cop associates that if crime is about the same as the 70s and 90s as some say why does it seem worse and they say it used to be just bad neighborhoods but now everything is a bad neighborhood, and that everything short of murder is underreported cause the city doesn't do anything anymore, so it probably is worse than other troubled times.

Except I notice you can go into the West Hills of Portland (which is basically what it sounds like) and all of a sudden there are no homeless camps and the parks are nice.

Myself I just don't go out at night, especially in the numbers (east Portland) and I find myself increasingly going out to the suburbs that I once scoffed at for shopping or entertainment.

Every city is going to have its upscale areas where the dregs of society don't congregate; Oakland has the Hills along Skyline, Rockridge, Montclair and Piedmont (which itself is its own municipality) however, they aren't immune to the issues. Vehicle and parts theft, the less frequent but, always possible break-in, vandalism, the homeless guy who becomes the neighborhood 'mascot' who gets everyone's doggy-bag provided he doesn't inconveniences anybody; don't cross the societal nuisance-line. Shocking crime gets chalked up as 'neighborhood color' part of the tapestry and life of urban living, once it becomes more frequent, residents start to sit up straight.

West Hills like Tigard, has all the Nike, Adidas and Colombia employees, go further west to Hillsboro and its a different world. What happens in Portland is 'over there', 'we don't go East of 5'.

My Liberal minded neighbor supports the "Defund the Police" movement and would like to see the Police disbanded, he told me.

Since I was in a riot in 1989, I explained to him in find detail what would happen to him and others if the Police were no longer around.

I think I scared the shit out of him.

This afternoon, we had our local shit bags close the N/B lanes of I-5 Freeway (through downtown Seattle) at about 3pm until now protesting the war in Tigray region of Ethiopia. They just stood in the middle of the freeway, spray painted the freeway roadway, held a protest vigil and totally stopped traffic for a couple of hours. Naturally our peace loving WSP accommodated that BS instead of pushing them off the freeway or arresting them. So, we'll have it again soon by some other group that believes there are no consequences of protesting on the freeway. Geez.

There are so many things gone wrong with Oregon and specifically Portland.

From the Occupy jazz hands movement fully supported and endorsed by city and state to the antifa filth, and now the drug addicted. Through all of it Portlanders have had a hate on for cops. Not all Portlanders, but the vast majority who kept their mouths shut for fear of being seen as not following the political line. Fuck them all.

Measure 110 passed a couple years ago; the bill essentially decriminalized Schedule I-IV drugs. Treatment was to be a component of decriminalization but is not required. Pointless anyway, there are little to no social services available for drug addiction treatment if you wanted it. The state has privatized almost everything. The only place state administered addiction treatment remains is in what is left of the state hospital and jail systems.

Soros backed Multnomah County DA Mike Schmidt imposes judicial preference throughout his office, fully supported by the mayor and police commissioner Ted Wheeler, and the state government led by Kate Brown; and the electorate.

Oregon/Portland voted for this shit. The rest of the state suffers for it.

Outside chance Christine Drazen wins governorship, but doubtful she'll have legislative support.

Democrats/progressives are fucking insane. Reap what you sow.

yes and it was the spotted owl. They are currently 'threatened' but the forest service expects them to be degraded to Endangered in a reasonably short order. One of the owl's problems, a series one, is the larger, more predatory barred owl which sill not only fight and detest but is a rapist besides. Nobody saw that coming.

Log trucks on the Olympic Peninsula used to be the dominant wild life, now they are still there but they are short-loaded with pecker-poles reportedly that's all they can cut. Logging is a shade of its former awesome self, the Spotted Owls are more at risk now than they were 25 years ago and plywood costs approximately as much as a house in 1985 (well maybe that's a stretch, but still.)

Hey now..
We have traffic calming barrels to slow the shootings down.
The child like mentality of the people supposedly in charge is unreal.

There is no shortage of stupid people with the same child like mentality to vote for them either.
There are 60 year old men in my shop who go unhinged about the police.
Hyper-emotional about it to the point you just want to throat punch them.

And when you are able to ask a simple question between the frothing at the mouth moments like..
What exactly have the police done to you that was so horrible?
Gang raped in the back of a cop car at 5 years old? Beaten up?
Nope... Just a ticket or two. But the cops were just after revenue and harassing them.

I have noticed that they all have an aversion to personal responsibility for even the most basic and simple things.
Nothing is their fault, ever.
Every choice they make is right, and every idea is cemented into their being.
You can't even hold a conversation with them without hysterics and talking over you.

So I don't engage, completely ignore them and refuse to be around them.
If they come into the break room and sit down I get up and leave.
And this isn't recent behavior, I've suffered these idiots for 21 years now.

I've been here since 1985, except for my time in the Navy.
I'll ride this storm out too.

It took off here about 2010 with the occupy stupidity.
They changed the law to allow them to sleep on the street and the fuckers never left, just trashed downtown for months on end.

Now it's just a free for all.
Strange times these days.

That's a long time!
I feel your pain... I'm stuck in Chicago for a few more years. But it's no where near as bad as out your way.

"Ride the storm out"...
Funny how some of us optimistically think about things.
So when we're not in the middle of a Cat5 hurricane, watching the world go to shit right in front of us, we're in a "Tropical Storm" and it's sooo much more pleasant.

I'm told of far off, foreign places where there's conservative people, who don't like big government all in their business, taxes actually go to things like fixing stuff, budgets are balanced, people like things such as "law and order", people respect themselves and others as well...

One of these days my friend, you and I shall meet up in a place like this and have us a drink or two.
Probably after shooting full auto

Sad day in OR. 114 passed by a very thin margin, and only 9 counties had the majority vote for it. The other 29 counties rejected it.

yet another example of Portland / Eugene setting the policy for the entire state. That has to stop.

Portland store forced to shut down after 15 break-ins in 18 months

“A Portland, Oregon, clothing store has been forced to permanently shutter after a string of break-ins amid rising crime in the city means the business is no longer financially viable.

Over the past 18 months, Rains PDX has been broken into 15 times. The cost of repairing the damage together with the amount of stock being stolen each time has given the owners no choice but to close for good.

To residents wondering why their favorite clothing shop is no more, a searing note on the front door reveals all with 'unrelenting criminal behavior' and 'escalating safety issues for our employees' to blame.

'Our city is in peril. Small businesses (and large) cannot sustain doing business, in our city's current state. We have no protection, or recourse, against the criminal behavior that goes unpunished. Do not be fooled into thinking that insurance companies cover losses. We have sustained 15 break-ins … we have not received any financial reimbursement since the 3rd,' the store's owner Marcy Landolfo wrote. …”
