I can’t remember the last time I saw a Jaguar on the road. And I’m near Atlanta where you see all kinds of cars every day from jalopies to Rolls Royce cars.

Look on the side of the road. In the break-down lane.

I note that the Trump tariffs don’t even match the highest trade barriers. If the tariff on American is 10%, then the new tariff on our end is 10%. If the tariff on American is 45%, the new tariff is 23% on our end.

The pain we feel in our investment portfolio is real, and we’re concerned, but President Trump is right to say, “Enough is enough.” In many cases the U.S. is not even matching the barriers to American goods.

1. Most US-made family cars are gasoline. Here in Europe most family cars are diesel.

2. Most US cars that ARE available here - Mustangs and their ilk, have HUGE engines, by Europrean standards, that just LURVE to suck up our $10 a gallon gas.

3. Like most of us here, I would have absolutely no idea where to get a US-made car - that wasn't a pick-up truck - serviced, let alone find spares for. Please remember that I live in a county alongside [and opposite in my house in this very street] around 35,000 US military personnel and their wives and families. The number of actual US cars they bring with them in miniscule. Why? No spares, except importing them via the base motor club. Many of the Japanese cars that you are familiar with, the popular Honda Odyssey as an example, don't come here at all. Bust a windshield and you're screwed. Your common or garden bread and butter cars are totally unsupported here, even the Mazda Miata - called the MX5 here, is substantially different enough under the hood to be unsellable, unless to a serviceman going home. Insurance for them is huge - simply because of the almost total lack of any back-up. Break down on the highway, like Chris my neighbour did last year driving up to Scotland....well, best not to.

There are ARE a good few US-style few pick-ups in UK, but this is not a pick-up culture like the US, where most everybody living outside the city limits has one or two. They are just too big and insurance-dear. My pal three doors down has one, a black Silverado. It does a whopping 15mpg. Your pick-ups mainly don't fit the much smaller roads, so Japanese or South Korean pick-ups rule.

Watch youTube's JayEmm on why US cars aren't popular here - it's an eye-opener.

As for 'luxury tax', nope, ALL imports are taxed by value, set at 20%. In fact ALL items on sale in UK, except children's clothing, food and books are rated at 20% VAT.

Most importantly Jaguar is halting production this year to switch to EV production. So they'd not be importing anything to anywhere.

There's also a 10% UK tariff on American cars so they are automatically 30% more expensive...

Fox Business reported yesterday or the day before that Jaguar Land Rover are sitting on a 400 day inventory in this country, even worse than Alfa Romeo, which was at about 250 days last I checked.

That means they're just now selling off the last of their unsold 2023 vehicles while better car companies are about to introduce their 2026 lines.

Faguar fucked themselves with that weird ad earlier this year and Land Rover seems intent on selling electric trucks. Both companies deserve to suffer, but I think management views the tariff as a chance to recover from their blunders.

So, nobody in the US wants to buy them... so they won't send anymore?
OK, that's smart. Stop sending them. We don't care.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

I never knew that. But then I've never been looking to buy an American car.

Mind you, I forgot to mention all the Teslas on the rods. However, they have an incredible supporting infrastructure, like them or don't.

Mind you, they need it.

My pal Martin has a spiffy new electric 'Mustang', and his son has the big V8 sporty item. He actually gets good gas mileage on a run - as much as 22 mpg, he says. That IS impressive, but so was the $80K he paid for it and the $5500pa insurance, plus the $1100 pa road tax. Company car, though...

Jaguar of today is not the Jag most folks think of,

bland SUV is what you see the Jag emblem on here,

re Land Rover, I know a few folks that bought or leased them, and quickly got rid of them as soon as the warranty expired,

one lawyer I know leased the big rover 5 or 6 yrs ago, he spent more time in a loaner and tow truck then he did in his big Rover he was leasing,

he said never again

I live in the sticks, but my son lives in a pretty nice residential neighborhood a couple hours away. I was dog sitting for him for a week, walking the doggie daily, and when he returned I mentioned my surprise at seeing so many Land Rovers in his neighborhood.

He replied..."Yeah, that is because their resale values are so low, none of them were bought new."

I see a lot of Defenders, very few Jags or other LR trucks
Range Rover is probably #2 around here for JLR vehicles.

The F-Type is a great looking [and sounding] car, but I've heard they don't have the best ownership experience

At 1 p.m. today I'll be a at Jaguar dealership facilitating the buy back of 2019 Jaguar I-PACE. My instructions are to ignore any damage it might have. I'm guessing the battery is shot and the vehicle is headed for disposal.

When I was in both England and Switzerland in the 1970s, I saw only two American cars. A Lincoln in London and a Caddy somewhere in Switzerland. At the time I was told there was only one GM repair center in all of Europe, in Paris. So no surprises, the Europeans have succeeded in the last 50 plus years in keeping US autos out of their markets. And yes, over the years, Jags and Land Rovers have had terrible maintenance reputations.
