I would say that a day after the Vegas shooting would really be a piss poor day to be caught with automatic weapons. They're going to have to go to a Law Library to get enough books to throw at him.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies said a Johnson City man faces multiple charges after unregistered automatic weapons were found during a traffic stop for speeding on Old Jonesborough Highway on Monday.

According to a WCSO news release, deputies saw Scott A. Edmisten, 43, speeding on Old Jonesborough Highway and the deputy initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle stopped around a half a mile later.

During the stop, deputies learned that Edmisten’s license was suspended for failure to appear in court and he was arrested.

According to the release, deputies found a loaded .357 magnum, a loaded .45 semi automatic, a full automatic AR rifle in .223 caliber, 1 full automatic AR rifle in .308 caliber, over 900 rounds of ammunition, as well as survival equipment.

Monday afternoon Sheriff Ed Graybeal said every clip and gun deputies recovered in the vehicle, was loaded.

“Everything this young man had was loaded, everything was ready to go…the guys this morning, it took probably two hours to count all of it, to find all of it, to make sure how much he had, so 900 rounds of ammunition on your person, is a lot….two of the rifles were fully automatic, and he didn’t have permits for those, matter of fact he had actually made those rifles fully automatic himself,” Graybeal said.

Deputies said neither of the full automatic rifles were registered, and neither had serial numbers.

Along with the weapons and ammunition, Sheriff Graybeal said they also recovered survival gear, things like hatchets, knives, and a fire starter.

‘If you get somebody that’s hunting, they will have some survival gear with them and their guns, but I’ve never met a hunter that had 900 rounds of ammo with it, and all these guns, plus survival gear,” Graybeal said.

While at the detention center, Edmisten reportedly made threats toward the arresting officers and staff members, and allegedly lunged toward investigators who tried to interview him.

Edmisten was charged with speeding, felony evading and possession of prohibited weapons.

He was arraigned in Sessions Court and is currently being held without bond.

Graybeal also told us when we sat down with him Monday afternoon that this was the biggest weapons and ammunition bust his department has ever made in a single traffic stop.

He added that given what’s unfolding in Las Vegas, he is thankful they were able to get these weapons, and ammunition off the street.

“I think it was a splendid traffic stop, especially after what happened in Las Vegas, whether this guy had any intentions of anything or not, I don’t know, but he was ready for something, every clip was loaded, every gun was loaded, everything was loaded that he had with him…when you get somebody that’s running 55 in a 30, and then 80mph and doesn’t want to stop for the police after they activate all of their gear, and have all this stuff with them, it throws a lot of things into your mind about why, and that’s why we gotta find out what we need to know,” Graybeal said.

According to the release, investigators are working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who have been called in due to the unregistered machine guns.

Some absurd comments in that article.

I have at least that much in varying calibers in my Jeep all the time.

I don't find the comment at all absurd. Legal or not, 900 rounds in a vehicle is a lot and such an amount would draw the attention of law enforcement if discovered during a stop.

"Monday afternoon Sheriff Ed Graybeal said every clip and gun deputies recovered in the vehicle, was loaded."

Clip? Seriously you are in Law Enforcement and you call the magazines "clips"?

I wasn't referring to only that particular comment.

I mean really, who here doesn't have "things like hatchets, knives, and a fire starter" in his or her vehicle? You can only have that stuff if you're a hunter?

And I just figured most members here like me would have a few hundred rounds of ammo in their cars most of the time. Perhaps not.

If the authorities don't know the difference between a clip and a magazine, do they have the ability to determine if an AR is fully automatic or semi automatic just by looking at it?

Aside from speeding, what laws did he break?

well from the article, the guns had altered serial numbers and several weapons were full auto....sooooooo

--and yes most cops are not gun people...I taught sailors how to shoot when I was in the service ( 21 yrs) and I was a cop for 18 years...maybe one person at the range on any given day actually knew the proper nomenclature and actually used it...

-- and I knew of only one guy at my PD that actually knew how to check a weapon to see if it was full-auto or not, but he was a gun guy like me. (I still get phone calls from officers on the street asking me questions about guns even though I'm retired)

Ghost Guns!!! Eek

I think I need to add some tinfoil to my hat, both bump stocks and "ghost guns" in high profile stories in the same week, it's like they're working from a script.

Article didn't say serial numbers were altered it said they didn't have any. 80% lower?

Minus the guns I have that stuff in my car. 900 rounds if I'm not heading to the range does seem like a lot.

Good question on how did they tell they were fully automatic. Won't be surprised if that aspect is incorrect.

900 rounds is a lot more than usually rides around in the car with me, but... everything I have with me is loaded, everything is ready to go. A magazine without ammunition in it is kind of pointless to take with you.

He is screwed, though, and he did the screwing himself when he modified the weapons.

Man, are you serious? Focusing on terminology is just silly. Everyone here knows what someone means when they say "clip".

Who

Cares?

Yeah, that's right- the cops are total ass clowns who don't know what they're doing because someone used the term "clip".

I'll have my carry gear on me, sure, but I don't keep long guns loaded up in the car ready to go, and probably wouldn't even if I didn't have the post rules and gate guards to worry about. Not worth the risk of theft.

I could see this knucklehead being loaded up for bear to go turn some ammo into smoke on the woods. I usually load up all my magazines before a range trip just so I don't have to waste trigger time. But dude, really bad timing, and really, really bad idea to modify weapons for fully automatic without the right paperwork.

Unless the PD is conflating bump fire stocks with an illegal full auto modification thanks to recent news coverage, this guy is well and truly hosed.

If he did mechanically modify his personal arsenal, I'm wondering how the hell he got the parts. On an AR it's not as simple as taking a file to some stuff.

If (and it's a big if) those were finished 80% lowers, and these lowers simply had the markings for full auto, but not actually a full auto sear, then it's possible he didn't really violate any weapon laws.

^^That's probably your best case here. If true, the guy in bracelets better call a lawyer and prep one hell of a defamation suit.

But it seems awfully silly for them to hold a big press conference based on some pictograms. It'd be like finding a whole bunch of brown sugar and telling everybody you seized a million dollars' worth of heroin. If they went far enough to check with the ATF registry I have a hard time believing they didn't confirm they were legitimately FA.

Complete M16 FCG parts are readily available online for $100-200 and it is not illegal to purchase them (depending on your interpretation of constructive possession).
