Let's see how this turns out.

80% lowers you finish yourself are not illegal.

Lowers that say 'auto' but don't have a full-auto sear and fcg are not illegal.

Carrying 900+ rounds is not out of bounds or illegal either.

I'll wait for the whole story on this one before getting too worked up.

If it's all true then he's a dirtbag and will deserve all the time they give him.

Complete M16 FCG parts are readily available online for $100-200 and it is not illegal to purchase them (depending on your interpretation of constructive possession).

Actually it's pretty easy to make a lightening link for an AR, the dimensions are on the internet, and you could make one using only a dremel.

Mac's are incredibly easy to switch over as well.

Guns with the serial numbers ground off are highly illegal.....whether or not the guns are actually full auto.

The article didn't say that the serial numbers were ground off. It said that the rifles didn't have serial numbers. Big difference there.

if he has illegally converted full-auto, it doesn't matter where the receivers came from, or how much ammo he had.

Considering today's political climate, we all know where he is headed...

Even unfinished lowers have serial numbers don't they?

Not 80%. You don't have to put one on either.

While entirely possible that he had 80% lowers, I would think that if he wasn't being an asshat with the cop, it would have been easy to determine on scene if they were in fact automatic or simply marked that way. Yes, not all cops know how to check (I work with some), but in the grand scheme of things it would not be that difficult to have someone that was proficient stop by the scene and make a experienced determination.

Minus the possibility of the asshat behavior factor, I'm thinking this guy is probably in a peck o' trouble.

I don't find the comment at all absurd. Legal or not, 900 rounds in a vehicle is a lot and such an amount would draw the attention of law enforcement if discovered during a stop.

Cops would have loved stopping about 8 of us traveling in convoy to a class in OH, then. Probably 10-12 handguns, at least 8 carbines, and at least 1k rounds of ammo for each of us in 2 pickups.

Which do you think is more likely? That it was an 80% lower, or one with the serial number altered? I know a lot of gun people, and don't know any that have made a gun from an 80% lower.

Maybe it just had a full-auto mark? If true, they'll figure that out quick.

Why speculate that there are the true scenarios? Maybe they are just really convincing de-milled weapons from a British collection. Maybe he is in the prop business and on his way to a movie set. Maybe . . .

You are nitpicking. The guy had un-taxed full auto guns. We may not think that should be the law, but it very clearly is a 10 years in the federal pen felony. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

I'm not talking about going to a class, but you already know that.

Now, are we going to keep coming back to this? You guys actually want to try to tell me that riding around day in, day out with the equivalent of thirty 30 round magazines of ammunition is normal, typical and wouldn't draw the attention of law enforcement? Don't talk to me about legalities or being in transit to the range or a class. Get real.

While I like the idea of it and am glad I live where few would blink, no it is not normal. And the muttonhead that modified his guns illegally is porked. He was stupid thrice. Modify the guns, take them out in public, break the speed limit.

I have a couple of lowers that have full auto selector markings but there's no way you're going to get the selector to actually move into that position.

Has it been proved that the weapons are selective fire or just marked that way?

Looking at the linked picture, the AR in the lower part appears to be a finished 80% that would explain the lack of a serial number.

Folks seem to be getting worked up about the guy have 30+ loaded mags in his car.

Yet when I read the linked story, it has a picture of the evidence showing only a dozen or so mags and then everything else in an ammo can or boxes.

Perhaps the only reason we care about this part of the story is that some of us actually do transport a fair bit of ammo and guns around sometimes and we hate the idea of that being suspicious or illegal.

Take a look at the picture of the evidence and you'll probably find more than a few of us have had that much gear in our car this month at one time or another.

The rest of the story -- the speeding, the aggression, potentially illegal full-auto weapons, etc, etc -- got this chucklehead in trouble. Not the mags or the ammo or heaven forbid the "fire starter".

And if the facts end up supporting illegal full-auto conversions then he deserves every day of the time they give him.
