I think I like the KY Governor. He stated today that American are getting "soft" when asked about the closing of schools in KY due to the cold.

I agree.

Over the span of twelve years as a kid, I don't ever remember the schools actually closing for cold or snow or anything. They were open. If you could make it in you made it in, if you couldn't you didn't. And we had some wicked -30F winters back in the 70s. It made that mile and a half walk to the bus stop kind of brutal at times.

I remember getting frostbite from nearly 40 years ago. The year was 1981. I was 11 at the time, and as a 6th grader in elementary school, we also helped act as school crossing guards.
One of the parents sat nearby in their car, and I would wait in the car until needed. Guess I was outside for a bit too long in one stretch, as I ended up with frostbite.
The parent took me to the school nurse and I sat there with warm, moist hand towels on my face. When they weren't looking, I felt my face, and could feel slush in my upper cheeks.

Mother nature is not to be messed with.

It's winding down down, thank God.
-22° right now, and only a degree less with wind chill.
Nothing like the -47° we had with wind chill yesterday morning.

Truck was grumbling when I started it 20 minutes ago. I started it at about 10:15 PM last night, so it was unstarted for nearly 6 hours.

Thanks to your post, and a show I watched that highligted on keeping vehicles running in Siberia, I went out to start my car. It barely did, after five hours of sitting.

Debating sleep versus listening to her idle for several hours.

I let it idle for 15 minutes, enough to get it to operating temp, then ran the heater to make sure coolant was circulating, then shut it off.

Repeat every three hours.

Since it's still -24 I guess I have to keep doing it for a while more.

Thanks! I'm on your three hour plan until this ends. Definitely a little more 'oomph' on startup.

A few below zero in Buffalo this morning with windchills around -30 for a day or two now. Blizzard conditions caused travel bans all over the place and we closed work yesterday and today. I'll have to snowblow the driveway but with 30-40 mph winds it won't be fun.

I wonder if any of the politicians supporting the move to all green energy are using fossil fuels to keep warm this week.

I like my wood stove!

We (across the river at the Moline IL Airport) broke a record earlier today, -33.

We're staying warm at home, only minor problem is a slow drain in my shower. We'll get a little snow this afternoon, then up to 45 and rain for Sunday.

We are originally from Presque Isle, Maine. My dad was telling me last night that the agreement with his parents was they walked to school at anything -30 degrees F or warmer. Colder, they would get a ride.

Neither he nor I miss living in the cold.

My car started easily the last two nights, so I'm glad I didn't risk four hours. Don't know where the dividing line would be. I was conservative enough to replace the battery last year when it was six years old and still working fine.

Too bad I'm not 20 years younger, though, as these last two nights have left me exhausted. It's only -4 now, and warming a bit overnight, so I'm thinking it's OK to try and recharge my own battery.

When I went to work Thursday it was 3º.
When I went Friday it was 6º
Today it was 12º.

Every morning it's twice what it was the day before. That would make Sunday morning 24º which is about what they're predicting.

And Monday morning 48º which oddly enough is also about what they're predicting.

My only concern is, if this rate keeps up, it'll be 1,536º by this time next week. Wink

Today's Groundhog Day & Paunxatawny Phil didn't see his shadow this morning, so it's settled. We're getting an early Spring.
