Well, I hope there's a draft and I kinda hope he's right, because I really want all these whining, coddled little fruits to go into hiding and get a taste of what hardship is really like. Smile

Not requiring military service or some similar mandated service to country and countrymen is a huge mistake.

IMHO it was a big step toward the Entitled Me Generation we're dealing with now.

Heinlein had it right in Star Troopers - no veteran status, no vote. You got no skin in the game, you got no say.

But I'm a grouchy old fart that's out of touch with the times...

South Korea has mandatory military service for 2 years after high school. When doing a project in South Korea between 2012-2015 I saw first hand their work ethic and how hard they work, even the younger ones. They also don't whine about shit like Americans do. They are proud of South Korea, and buy South Korean stuff.

Not sure if the U.S. military could handle as many people as a mandatory draft would provide them. But some program to instill self discipline would certainly help.

I think you could still be required to some sort of military service, just not as a front-line soldier.
Here's the WW2 version of the story.

If we want mandatory 1 year military service, I would say a 2 year commitment for some type of work for the country. Interstate asphalt paving crew or some other productive task Wink

The unions would never allow that.

Selective Service local board member here.

If a Draft is required, there are no deferments and Conscientious Objectors (those apposed to violence or war) will receive an alternative service assignment

I think politicians will learn too late that allowing patriotism to die in the younger generations was a mistake.

Israel has a mandatory three years for men and two for women. In the United States, Marines met their quota. They know how to reach 18 year olds.

If the current trend in the services (except the Marines) of not meeting recruitment goals continues for long, a draft might have to be revived.

You would hope the military would change the mindset of these kids being drafted, if one was adopted.
If they didn't we would just end up with the likes of LEO's that were cowards or or worse of these so called mass-shootings like in Uvalde and elsewhere.
I imagine they would never be sent into combat anyway.

How many here have a 'draft age' son you'd be as enthusiastic to send off to be part of the current military of this country as you're all indicating? Serious question...I've got SERIOUS reservations on this topic!

I'm guessing the Marines have a very simple recruitment message: "If you're a momma's boy, a sissy, or a mamby pamby, we don't want you, only real men need apply".
