To my two grandkids...I'm Papa and my wife was Nanny...

Now, my wife's grandparents on her dad's side were referred to as "Big Mama" (she refused to be called anything else and would get pissed if referred to as grandmother) and her grandfather was "affectionally" called "The Lizard" (it's a fitting title with a long story...but the asshole loved it).

When we were young, we called our grandparents Papa and Mama "insert their last name"

My kids always called my parents Granna and Papa...my mom (Granna) actually decided that's what they wanted to be called, and taught my kids early on.

My grandparents were not very sympathetic to anything, as I recall. Definitely not the type usually depicted in TV sitcoms. They were hard-working farm folk and did not coddle or spoil their numerous grandkids (one pair had 24 and the other had 17). I was considered lazy (true) because when I came to visit them I didn't immediately go out to feed the chickens and milk the cow (I was a city kid--what did I know about cows?).

None yet, but my daughter plans for them to call us Gangie and Pop-Pop.

Uh, no.

My favorite was a neighbor in Texas, a big guy who used to play in NFL. His grandkids somehow got to call him "dude." It was hilarious to see little kids out in public hollering over to this 70+ year old guy "Hey Dude, come look at this!"
