Utah teen shamed over 'racist' prom dress wins praise in China

quote:
“Very elegant and beautiful! Really don’t understand the people who are against her, they are wrong!” a supporter chimed in of the cheongsam, otherwise known as a qiapo. “I suggest the Chinese government, state television or fashion company invite her to China to display her cheongsam!”

“It is not cultural theft. It is cultural appreciation and cultural respect,” another agreed.

According to the Post, Daum’s story has been making waves across Weibo, a Twitter-like platform popular in China.

“Culture has no borders. There is no problem, as long as there is no malice or deliberate maligning. Chinese cultural treasures are worth spreading all over the world,” one user mused.
Ha freaking ha

No matter what you say, do, or wear, someone will take to social media and claim you're a ________.

Funny, I thought shaming and bullying were supposed to be bad.

I keep thinking the dress was made in China, then exported to the US. The intention was that it be sold to American women.

My wife wore a similar dress for part of our wedding reception. Her parents brought the fabric back from Hong Kong and found a dress maker here. There's certainly a big export market for pre-made. No way to tell in this case though I lean to your thoughts given the second hand purchase. The look for offense in everything brigade really needs to zip it. It's almost as if they're only happy when they're playing victim.

I'm am so sick of this bullshit. So what do we call Japanese business men wearing western style suits? What do we call the rest of the world wearing t-shirts and blue jeans? It's not like she was wearing rosary beads as an ankle bracelet while touring St. Peter's. People need to get the fuck over it and quit looking for things to be offended by.

If someone appreciates a style that was created by an individual of a different race or culture, then that person is not allowed to sport that style?

* So, all Black people should just wear loin cloths?
* All Mexicans should wear huge sombreros?
* People from Germany should wear wooden shoes?

And, the people pushing this idea are the ones who aren't racist??? Roll Eyes

That's the problem. They ARE the racists.

They are no mental giants, either. Their 'offenses' and 'arguments' are destroyed many times over - yet they can't help themselves.

They have NOTHING productive to offer society - so - much of what they do is want to hear themselves talk to appear relevant.

And that is exactly what we saw in this instance.

Anonymity is a big problem. If you give people the chance to say things publicly without identifying themselves, the cowards among them-- and there are many-- will take that opportunity to say the vilest, meanest things they can think of.

Yeah that article is nice and all, but just what do the freakin' Chinese know about cultural appropriation? They're nose blind to it, since it's all around them.

It's not up to them, it's up to the pseudo-Chinese sensitivity monitors to determine. We need to send some folks to the crying closet....

Sorry, the word Lederhosen is a trigger for this image, every time:

Now, you see: Historical ignorance and cultural insensitivity. Go sit away from everyone else in the diversity corner. Wink

It’s believed that wooden shoes were once common throughout Europe. The word sabotage comes from the French sabot (“shoe”) and reportedly referred to disrupting a mechanical action by tossing a wooden shoe into the works. A pair of plastic Crocs wouldn’t have the same effect.
