As I understand it, when there are 2 Navy Captains on board, one is the "Captain" and the other is called "Commodore". In speaking to Warrant Officers, it is appropriate to address them as "Mister (last name)" (at least it was in 1970). flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

In 1978, was present when a W03 was addressed as "Sir" by someone. He stated; "No need to call me "Sir, I'll be here all day. "Mister" will do..." (with a smile). "the meaning of life, is to give life meaning" ✡ Ani Yehudi אני יהודי Le'olam lo shuv לעולם לא שוב!

^ ha, I had forgotten about “commodore” yes...if there are two persons of captains rank on one ship, the “Captain” is always the one who is in charge of that ship...the other might be called commodore. Or if he commanded another ship, he would be addressed as Captain (ships name or his last name) And back to the CWO, it is never wrong to call someone “sir” regardless of rank....IIRC the bluejackets manual says that if you are in doubt, sir will serve. “Mister” was for O3 and below and for CWOs, but I respected them (CWO)more than ring knockers and always called them “sir”. Get my pies outta the oven! |
One of the weirdest situations with mixed services I've encountered was while deployed in 2003. I was in the Air National Guard, so we were Air Force but also working alongside a whole lot of Marines from the 3rd MAW. We had some sort of awards ceremony at the chow hall toward the end the the Air Force commander is handing out coins and medals to Air Force, Army and Marine personnel. He's handing the item to the Air Force Airman who then salutes and he returns it. Same for the Army guys. Then he gets to the Marines and THEY CANNOT SALUTE INDOORS! It was weird and funny at the same time.

Marines generally don't salute unless they're wearing covers (headgear). And they generally don't wear covers indoors, unless under arms or on certain specific types of duties. However, regulations also state that Marines are allowed to salute uncovered/indoors, especially when serving with members of the Army or Air Force, if "failure to do so would cause embarrassment or misunderstanding", and that in mixed branch situations "social customs or military courtesy should always be interpreted so as to prevent awkward situations". (It seems the Marines in question may have been stuck on the former, while forgetting the latter. )
