The other thread on upgrading a Valentine 1 radar detector because it was falsing all the time got me thinking about replacing my V1 with a new detector instead of going the upgrade route.

So what is the best radar detector for the money today? Read some good things about the Uniden R3 and Escort 360, but I'm sure there are others. So what do you have and/or what do you like?

As somebody pointed out there, I'll give up some of the filtering updates and GPS capabilities for the range and arrows of a V1. Last purchase was only a couple years ago and did the research, I think that's what it still comes down to, plus some personal preference and a little bit of price difference.

I travel a lot for work and purchased my first RD a few months ago. After doing some research, the Uniden R1 stood out. According to tests, it has the best range for highway use and is substantially cheaper than Valentine or Escort.

The R1 has no GPS module and is about $100 cheaper than the R3 which has the GPS feature.

I didn't really see the need for GPS personally.

I have tested and or gone through about 5 detectors over the last year or two. Currently I have an Escort Max 360c. Its proven to be easy to use and update and quite good at tuning out false alarms... something that drives me crazy. I’d recommend it

I own both a V1 and a Passport w/ GPS and Bluetooth connectivity for constant updates about traffic and speed traps. I love the V1 interface, but no ability to update firmware (must replace entire unit) is poor hardware mgmt. The Passport is much more feature rich.

Every other modern electronic device I own allows for “free” firmware updates. My iPhone does, my Passport, as does my Fractal audio pre-amp, etc. I’m not pleased with Valentine’s approach to force a replacement at 85% of NIB. Come on Valentine, keep up with the future.

I haven't owned a radar detector in years, but am curious about a couple things with the Escort Max 360...

I like the idea of something to remind me of the speed limit (sometimes those signs aren't posted very often around here) - has it been accurate about the speed limit on the roads you've been driving?

Are you using the EscortLive app and if so, any issues with it?

If you have a smart phone, the Waze app will show you speed limits while it’s running.

Or an $70 refurb'd Garmin unit will give you speed warnings if that's primarily what you're after.

Now back to radar detectors...

I use the Valentine 1 on motorcycles and Escort Max 2 in a car. In my experience, in spite of the audio alert, the Escort small screen is useless on a motorcycle. Of course, YMMV.

The Escort 360 is rather pricey at this time, so I'll pass for now.

AKA the Lazar technology used by Police, if you get "zapped" by them, they got you.

Gentlemen:
Save your cash. When I played (forced to, actually) the speeding ticket game, if I stopped you and saw your Radar Detector, it meant an instant ticket. You turned yourself into Mr. This Applies To Everyone But Me. Even if you hid it before I caught up to you, I knew you had one. Why? I used instant on radar. When I lit you up and your speed immediately dropped 10 or 15 MPH (or I saw an immediate brake light flash at night)I knew you were detector equipped.
Your detector will protect you only in the case of a lazy cop who runs with his radar on all the time.
I gave everybody 20 mph over on divided highways and 15 over on secondary streets. Residential areas I would stop you at ten over, because of kids and bikes and dogs, oh my!
Even with my "allowance levels" it was a target rich environment.
I hated playing this game. If felt it was singling out one person for something (including cops) everyone does.

Yes the laser detection works, of course nothing is going to help you *if* your the only car on the road and get zapped. 9 times out of 10 thats not the scenario I drive in. If a car in front gets zapped. The laser will “scatter” some and is usually picked up well by the 360c Max. The Escort App is a bit rudimentary, but it does the job. The speed limit alert works well also.

Your going to get as many opinions about detectors being a waste of many as you will gun control. Mine has saved me 3 times and paid for itself. I’ve been given warnings with it mounted to my windshield as well.

Don't speed.

And stay in the left-most lane as long as possible, until they try to pass you on your right , then switch lanes.

Instant ticket = Instant Attorney

Also, if you have the authority to wash me in RF or IR radiation, I have the right to know and detect it (any speeding aside) Wink

I take my medicine as needed, but some speed limits are ridiculous. I get it, not even 1% of drivers have significant driving classes or track time. Like Robert Deniro says in the movie “Heat”: “You do what have to you do and I’ll do what I do.”

I will say however that your allowances are pretty generous, for a copper. Wink

I have had Escort brand detectors for over 25 years, got the first one as a gift. I have never seen any need to try another brand. Yes, they're that good.

That only applies if you are the first in line or only car in the area.
When you zap some guy 1/4 to 3/4+ mile ahead of me, (depending on terrain), I know it.

Radar is like a flashlight on a dark night. Shine on the object that you want to see and other objects get painted too...and someone looking can see the light even if it's not pointed at them.

ETA - as Signified said, Yoops allowances ARE generous. If I was outside of those speeds, I would expect to get written up too!

I was stopped at least three times in VA, where RDs are banned, and the cop never even noticed it right there next to my mirror. Didn't get tickets either.

If the state has the ability to watch me with radar, then I have a clear conscience in knowing when and where they're watching me.

My 9500ix is getting a little long in the tooth, but it still pays for itself once or twice a year. Got a long bike trip through the desert coming up, and I will be "protected."
