I'm so sorry you're going through this. Sounds like you got solid breeders who are trying to do the ethical thing for you and the pup.

As an aside, mild anemia in large and giant breed puppies is relatively "normal." They are literally growing so fast that the bone marrow cannot keep up with the demand for new RBC's, and many are borderline anemic or slightly anemic for the first 6-10 months of age. So that really doesn't give us much to go on.

FWIW, knowing what I know, I'd be doing the same thing you are doing. Your heart will hurt for the sick pup, but you are doing right by your family and future. Keep us posted on how pup fares.

Update.. we took the pup back to the breeder, I guess within a day or so of my last post. Days went by and he was fine. I talked to them this evening and he had 4 seizures on Monday. They were as upset and devastated as we were. She took him to her vet Tuesday and they had to put him down. Eek He advised it would only get worse and life on meds would not be pleasant for him. I am SO thankful we took him back and did not have to make that decision.

So sad to hear this, dry-fly. At the very least, closure for all. Should you get a new guy, love him double.

Very sorry to hear. We had a dog for two years that suddenly started having seizures. Lots of tests and lots of money over 4-5 days and they told us the same, he wasn't going to get better but worse.

So sorry you had to go through that. I'm sure your new pup will help tremendously!

Wow. So sad, but ultimately probably for the best. I’m very sorry for you and the breeders. I’m also glad they were there to stand up for their pup. Best of luck with a new puppy.

Sounds like the best outcome for a crappy situation.
Just FYI, you may want to consider genetic testing for your new pup too and look into the specific breed to see be sure the test you use can identify that particular problem.
Hopefully the breeders will not continue to breed those parents. The problem probably doesn't occur in all the pups but still continues in the bloodline.
While I feel bad for the breeders having to deal with this and yes, they did the right thing for you, they should have known better if they are serious breeders.
Hopefully they have a spay/neuter contract for any dogs they sell so this won't continue to happen to their offspring.

Here is a good article that tries to explain what testing can and can't do at this point in time. While there are no guarantees any particular dog will be healthy after testing, they can really stack the odds and weed out the likely problems.

Sorry about that but it's good that you turned him back to the breeder to deal with that, it's difficult enough.

That is so sad. A very difficult situation and decision you had to make. The breeder seems top notch and I'm sure they felt the pain as well.

Sick and/or injured animals are the most difficult things of the heart. I had my setter die in my arms during a seizure, it's heartbreaking that you had to experience this loss, as it affects all of us animal lovers. Godspeed sweet pup Frown I'm sorry for your loss.

Thank you all once again. I appreciate the advice and sympathy. There were 13 in the litter, which surprisingly is not uncommon for Bullmastiff’s. The other 12 have been solid with no issues. The plan is to pick up one of the litter mates this Tuesday. I know some of y’all have expressed concern about the whole litter, but after talking to two vets it looks like a congenital issue with the one puppy. I know there’s no way to be certain, but we still very much want one. The breeder has been fantastic throughout this, we’ve actually gotten to know them pretty well. Anyway…..wish us luck!
