Gay Coffee shop owner refuses to serve Christian customers Login/Join

“I’m gay, you have to leave,” the owner tells the group. “This is offensive to me. I own the place. I have the right to be offended.”

The gay owner of a Seattle coffee shop, Bedlam Coffee, verbally harangues a group of Christians with extremely abusive language, stuff that is basically unprintable here. Some are already taking it to Yelp.

The video recorded by one of the customers is NSFW, some of it really disturbing. Somebody really needs to wipe the smile off his face. Plus the hypocrisy of this is insane. Leftists are a really hateful group.

So the same group that made the guys make the gay people a cake are going to make this guy serve the Christians, right?

So, they are going to be sued, right? Dragged into court just like the bakers were? Harangued by the media, right?

Yeah, right. Regards 18DAI

I can't watch the video. How did he know they were Christian?

I wear a cross around my neck. Was it something like that?

And yes, leftist are indeed a vile, hateful lot.

Not serving me a cup of coffee with Christian markings on the cup and not serving me because I'm Christian are two entirely different things.

They were a Christian group going around the city distributing pro-life flyers and one of the coffee shop employees found a copy outside, posted on public property (perhaps a telephone pole). The owner figured out that some of the group was in his shop.

I see. Well, of course, the shop owner should be able to deny service to anyone for any reason on his own property, but since we now have a precedent with the whole gay cake thing...

What's good for the goose...

Looks like a good place to open a "anyone invited including Christians" coffee shop right across the street.

Cakes, Coffee, who cares, it's their place, right?

Being assholes about it is a separate thing.

But this ain't no different than wedding cakes... and what's good for the goose...

Personally, I think both are foolish, businesses exist to make money, selling coffee and cakes make money, and interjecting politics and such into business is often a bad idea, but not everyone can get past some things, I guess.

So long as he's fine with other shops refusing to serve gays, muslims, whatever, I don't care. Let the market sort it out.

Coffee is just coffee.

A wedding cake means something more.

Christians hold marriage to be a sacred vow with man and woman before God.

There is a significant difference.

I just sincerely hope the folks who claim to be Christian just walk away and leave this situation alone! That would be the true Christian way of handling it. No law suits, no need for apologies. Just say a prayer for the coffee shop owner and move on.

There is a significant difference.

I understand many Christians believe this, but it's purely subjective and not universal.

What's important to each group differs, as does the why.

The way in which both scenarios are the same, and the part that matters most in terms of a free and functioning society, is that the owner of X can refuse service to Y for any damn reason they please (short of the official protected classes the government has defined).

The gay coffee shop owners may feel equally strongly about how egregious it is to them that many Christians call them monsters or whatever, as you do that making a wedding cake is a big damn deal and ought not be required. Both are entirely subjective.

They're the same in that sense, and the same in terms of the business owner's rights to choose who they do business with, for, more or less, any reason at all.

The bigger issue is one of freedom, not the definition of nor magnitude of marriage.

And this is what freedom looks like.

Sometimes it's ugly.

But it beats not being free.

Again, none of which endorses or excuses someone being a dick about it.

Um. Whuh?

If all that means that .gov has no Constitutional authority to force Christian bakers to make a wedding cake for a gay marriage, nor to force gay coffee vendors to serve Christians, I'm with you there.

After watching the video I was all for saying this shop owner is a POS.

Then I did a little digging. I'm not ready to condemn him yet. I think there is more to this story.

This is the website for the group that was in his coffee shop for a break from whatever it was they were doing in the neighboorhood.

I think the Supreme Court case is based on artistic endeavor as freedom of expression. Photos, cakes, flowers. A cup of coffee is a cup of coffee.
