For the past few years I enjoy listening to thunderstorms or rain when I lay down for the night. What do you listen to that helps you go to sleep?

I purchased a cheap noise machine and have left it on the "summer night" setting. Once or twice we've had a temporary power loss and when the power returns it defaults to rain. The summer night reminds me of East Texas.

This one for $25.

Green or brown noise. I need to get one of those machines. I use my cell phone but am not wild about that.

I have an app for android that I use when I travel called Relax Water, free on the app store. It has a variety of sounds including rain, storms, water falls, rivers, brooks, waves on a beach, etc. It also has timers and other features. I've had it for years. The icon has water flowing from bamboo with a gong in the background.

I listen to sax from the likes of Getz, Webster, Coltrane. Slow songs at low volume. Relaxes and puts me to sleep.

At home we usually have a fan running in the bedroom for some white noise.

I’ve used various white noise/sound machine apps in the past but when Apple introduced their “background sounds” option in the settings I ditched the apps for a much smoother experience.

They have a number of sounds to choose from:

Balanced Noise
Bright Noise
Dark Noise
Ocean
Rain
Stream
Night
Fire
Babble
Steam
Airplane
Boat
Bus
Train
Rain On Roof
Quiet Night

“Stream” is my usual go to sound if I am at a hotel or just want a change from the fan.

We recently have begun having a problem with a neighbors dogs barking incessantly and neither the fan or the phone sounds are enough to avoid disruption.

I’ve always had a problem sleeping with earplugs, because then it is too quiet. Just picked up a pair of “sleep earbuds” to give a try. Very small so side sleeping with a pillow doesn’t cause pressure or activate controls.

Can use as regular BT earbuds for music or activate “sleep mode” where they disconnect BT from phone and have a built in list of 4 or 5 different background sounds.

Tonight is my first night with them, will see how well they work and update.

YouTube videos, through earpods, with the phone screen turned off. Choose videos 45 minutes in duration, and upon awakening reset video to continue throughout the story. Topics include cosmology, nature, biography, history, etc.

I use either forest sounds which is basically crickets, cicadas, etc or rain.

When I was a kid (Early 90s) there were CDs called "Relax With..." and were all CDs of various sounds. My favorite was Sailboat Journey which had water hitting the side of a boat, wood creaking, buoy bells, etc. Other notables were wind chimes, desert winds, autumn journey, etc.

Their one downfall in my opinion is they offered 2 mixes. With without music and one "enhanced with music". The music ones were inferior in my opinion.

Unfortunately, most of them, including Sailboat Journey appear lost to time. The only copies I've ever managed to find were enhanced with music copies.

Edit: Apparently I haven't looked in a while, but I just found it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKiUW8RinPQ

The past year or so I've been listening to gregorian chants on the Hallow app. It works wonderfully for me.

Prior to that, for about 20 years, I'd listen to binaural delta wave sleep sounds. That worked well too.

I listen to House of Rain channel on YouTube, no thunder as it bothers my mini-poodles. No ads, turns to black after 10 seconds. a new video comes up every day. I don't know if it's computer generated. I used to go to other channels where the people do go to the place and record it. But that means the video stays up the whole time.

Might try putting one of these outside your home where the neighbors dogs can hear it, it's harmless, won't hurt them, but might work to keep the dogs barking at bay.....

Solar powered Ultrasonic Outdoor Bark control Device Link

Ultrasonic Devices

What They Do: Noise-making devices produce high-pitched sounds in response to barking. The noise is ultrasonic, meaning humans can’t hear it, but dogs can. The tone annoys them, so it acts as a correction, and it stops when the barking stops. Therefore, your dog will learn that barking brings on the noise and silence makes it go away.

These devices come in both indoor and outdoor versions. Both respond to barking from any dog as long as that dog is within range of the machine. This is a bonus if you have more than one dog and both are barkers. The outdoor machines are also great for shushing dogs in your neighbors’ yards which can prevent barking competitions between your dog and theirs. However, if you have multiple dogs and only one dog is a nuisance barker, take note that all the dogs will receive the device’s correction.

I have to have the sound of a fan loud enough to drown out other noise. I spent many years on the road in hotels and got used to turning the A/C fan to “constant on” for the noise. Now I have a fan app on my iPad that mimics the sound of a fan and I turn it up to the desired volume right before I go to bed. I can’t sleep well without it.

Due to the constant ringing in my ears, I HAVE to have some background noise going to sleep. Usually its old 70's country music. Sometimes I tell Alexa to play me Meditation or Spa music, and that's pretty relaxing.
No matter what I'm listening to, there's always a fan going when I'm sleeping.

Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.
