Dozens Killed During Stampede At Iranian General's Funeral

https://www.zerohedge.com/geop...ian-generals-funeral

What some observers described as the largest public outpouring of grief in Iran since Ayatollah Khomeini's funeral in 1989 wasn't free from bloodshed, as dozens died during a stampede in Monday's funeral procession for Qassem Soleimani, the iconic Iranian general killed by the US during a visit to Baghdad last week.

According to WSJ, 32 people died during the stampede, and another 190 were injured, as the crowd panicked during the ceremony in Iran's Kerman province, where Suleimani was set to be buried on Tuesday, after the ceremony was postponed as crowds from the procession blocked vehicles from getting to the cemetery on Monday. Other reports put the death toll as high as 40.

The regime said the stampede was caused by overcrowding, and denied that the stampede was the result of an attack. Government officials said ambulances were ready along the route of the procession in case of an incident.

Meanwhile, Iranian leaders issued more threats of retaliation on Tuesday, the fourth and final day of mourning for the general. And as if that weren't enough, Iran's Parliament on Tuesday passed a bill labeling the entire US military as a terrorist organization.

"I say the last word first. We will take revenge," said Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami, a commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, speaking at Gen. Soleimani’s funeral procession in Kerman province.

"If they make another move, we will set fire to the place they love," said Gen. Salami, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency.

In a telling example of just how much time it can take for news to trickle out of Iran, word of the deadly stampede only reached western media outlets early Tuesday morning in New York. Most of the footage from the funeral hit early on Monday, which is when footage of Ayatollah Khamenei chanting at the state funeral (he also appears to be crying).

But apparently, because of the stampede, Suleimani's body hasn't actually been buried yet, and Western media outlets claimed that many of the 1 million or so attendees (roughly 1% of Iran's population) only attended because they feared retaliation from the state.

Yes, but none of them can carry a tune.

I am the very model of a modern Major-General,
I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical
From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical;
I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical,
I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical,
About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news,
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.

Israel can, by and large, take care of itself militarily. What it can't suffer, but has, are the Jew-hating Democrats that foment the danger it constantly faces. Democrats have always been anti-Jew and anti-Israel, while simultaneously being un-American. What they've become is anti-American, too. Un-American and anti-American are distinctly different. I wonder how much longer Americans can suffer those in power that aren't just not-with-them, but actively-against-them.

Here is what I really cannot fathom. All of my Jewish friends and any Jewish people I run into, they ALL vote Democrat. Yet the Democrat party hates Israel. I can never figure that out.

Just discussed this yesterday with my Jewish wife. Her entire family all votes dem. I must conclude there's some strange aspect of jews that they make mistakes of self preservation. Self preservation seems to be a lower priority than other factors. The say "Never again!" but vote for American politicians who don't support Israel. They think Brack did support Israel, and think Trump is anti semitic. I've given up on them.

It took me a long time to understand it, but I finally realized that there is little reason for most Americans of Jewish ancestry to feel any affiliation with or reason to support Israel. And that really makes sense for a variety of reasons.

There is no good analogy of Jews and Israel for other groups, but saying an American Jew should support Israel is in some ways similar to saying I should support German’s political acts because my mother was a Lutheran and all her grandparents immigrated from Germany.

As much as I can understand the situation, there are two groups of Jews who would feel no reason whatsoever to support the Jewish state. On the one hand are those who believe that its very existence is illegitimate because it wasn’t supposed to be established until the arrival of the Messiah (no, Jesus doesn’t qualify). On the other, and while I don’t have the statistics I’ve read, a large number of people of Jewish ancestry (I’ll refer to them as Jews for convenience) in this country are not practicing religionists and therefore biblical prophecies and gathering together for religious reasons are meaningless to them.

What does surprise me to a degree, though, is why Jews would support the left. Even ignoring the fact that the Nazis were socialists, some of the worst anti-Semitism in the last century was exhibited in the Soviet Union. Plus I’m sure that most Jews recognize that much twentieth century anti-Semitism wasn’t about religious practices. The Nazis, for example, considered anyone to be a Jew who had a single distant Jewish relative, and as were even people of Jewish heritage who had formally converted to Christianity decades before—sometimes as infants.

Again, I can’t claim to know for certain, but sometimes it seems that some American Jews are still afraid of the prejudices and discrimination that were common at one time, and therefore believe they must demonstrate that they shouldn’t be treated as Jews regardless of their names and heritage. Supporting American leftist positions in favor of Arabs against Israel would be one way to do that.

(If someone started a separate thread on the topic, I would move my comments/speculation there.)

Interesting. Rush was speculating this morning that this is where the pallets of cash Obama sent the Iranians wound up being used.

I guess it's like other facets of TDS: You can't make sense of it, because TDS defies all logic. Ok: Dislike him for what he is, what he does or what he says, but to dislike him for things he's never done, said or supported? Entirely made up stuff for which there's not a shred of evidence? Like the anti-Semitism thing: Where's the evidence to support that allegation?

I wouldn't give up, unless continuing to press your point would produce strife w/in the family. Calmly, respectfully ask them why they believe Trump is anti-Semitic.

Oddly enough, btw, support for Israel somehow does not equate to support for Jews in the minds of many, perhaps even most, U.S. Jews. Don't ask me to explain it. I can't. Perhaps because many U.S. Jews aren't very "Jewish"--their religious tenets being more honoured in the breach than the observance. I grew up in a community so Jewish it was affectionately referred to as "Little Israel" hereabouts Smile. Once had many Jewish friends--even a Rabbi. Dated a Jewish girl. One of my best friends, definitely a Christian, was married to a Jewish woman.

Perhaps it's because Republicans are equated with conservatives, conservatives are equated with Christianity, and Christianity is equated with antipathy towards Jews? Democrats, OTOH, are regarded is more-or-less areligious, and therefore not? For those following that logic: It must escape them that many on the left are more deeply committed to opposition to all religious expression than most Christians are to Christianity. But, as I said: It makes little sense to me.
